What Have You Missed?

Today (13 February), Sir Ian McKellen and Lorraine Kelly appeared as guests on The One Show.

During a studio conversation about his current theatrical portrayal, the renowned Lord of the Rings icon, McKellen, was reminded by co-host Alex Jones about his previous participation in the 2022/2023 pantomime season. The seasoned actor, who is 84 years old, had acted alongside comedian John Bishop in the role of Mother Goose.

The plot of the story involved Mother Goose (played by McKellen) and her spouse Vic (performed by Bishop) who managed an animal sanctuary from inside an abandoned Debenhams. However, their lives took a turn when a mystical goose arrived on the scene, as acquiring fame and wealth was not as enjoyable as they initially thought.

Reflecting on their past performances, McKellen confessed that he developed strong romantic feelings towards Bishop.

Actors Ian McKellen and John Bishop were spotted backstage at the Duke of York's Theatre, along with Jodie Whittaker. The trio seemed to be having a good time together, as captured in a photograph by David M. Benett and Alan Chapman.

What, How, And Why?

Jones first expressed that she is aware of Ian's impressive range, which includes performing Shakespeare as well as pantomime. She then referenced a particular performance where Ian played the role of Mother Goose alongside John Bishop, who was Ian's partner at the time. Jones mentioned that she imagines that was an entertaining experience.

The Hollywood visitor chuckled and answered, "I developed a bit of a crush on John - but then again, who doesn't?"

The reason why Mother Goose is such an important figure is because she's in the middle of everything. It's all focused on her, and personally, I wanted to recreate the experiences I had when I was young. In the past, grand pantomimes would begin on December 26th and continue until Easter Saturday, and I thought about whether we could bring back that tradition and extend pantomime beyond just a Christmas event. Overall, it was a really enjoyable experience.

Next, there was an unexpected delight in the form of a video sent by the Bishop.

On camera, he addressed Ian and expressed his well wishes for his upcoming play. He eagerly anticipated watching it and noted that he was the last person to recite Shakespeare to him on stage. Specifically, he recalled performing a sonnet to him, Mother Goose, and concluded the performance with a kiss.

"I believe Player Kings will be enjoyable, but let's face it, it won't be as pleasurable as making out with me," he teased. "I'll talk to you later. Take care and may God bless you."

McKellen expressed his surprise and delight to Jones and Jermaine Jenas, the co-host, saying: "Wow, this is an incredible gift, thank you so much!"

More On The One Show: What Else?

After this touching incident, McKellen shared that he had only just started removing his Christmas tree. He followed the tradition that if one fails to put away all the holiday adornments before twelfth night, they must wait till Shrove Tuesday.

The TV presenter Kelly was also present to advertise her forthcoming book, titled "The Swimmer of the Island."

The primary focus of the story is a young woman who must depart from her residence. As the plot progresses, a significant revelation occurs, shedding light on the reason for her departure, which is a distressing event. Consequently, she relocates to London.

She has remained in the same place for two decades. Due to past events, she has developed a feeling of unworthiness, leading her into an unhealthy relationship where she neglects herself. Returning to Orkney, she must work on rebuilding connections with loved ones and face the challenges presented by sibling rivalry and grief. Despite the hardships, there are moments of humor and positivity throughout. Additionally, her fear of water, rooted in a legitimate cause, constantly haunts her. Thankfully, a group of incredible women are there to support her, providing the strength necessary for her to eventually confront her fear.

BBC One broadcasts The One Show on a daily basis during the working week.
