Jutkiewicz strikes late as Birmingham hold Hull

Hull City

In the first half of the game between Hull and Birmingham, Ozan Tufan scored a goal to give Hull the lead.

Birmingham was awarded a valuable Championship point at Hull City when Lukas Jutkiewicz scored just one minute after joining the game as a substitute.

The leader of the Birmingham club observed the game from the sidelines when Ozan Tufan scored to give the Tigers the lead in the first half. The Blues team argued that Tufan had used his arm to defeat goalkeeper John Ruddy.

Birmingham, who had the same number of points as Stoke in third-last place, found it difficult to make progress against Hull who were trying to solidify their hold on sixth place, the last spot for the play-offs.

During the game, Mark Venus, the temporary manager of the Blues, made four changes to his team after they struggled to make progress. However, it was the arrival of Jutkiewicz, who had previously scored the only goal for Birmingham in the 1-1 draw against the same team in the FA Cup back in January, that ultimately made all the difference.

Birmingham had suffered defeat in their last two games, causing them to plummet perilously close to relegation danger. They were keenly aware that they might find themselves in the bottom three should other matches not go their way during this week's round of games.

Temporary manager Mark Venus altered the team lineup with four substitutions following their defeat against Southampton where they allowed seven goals. In the early moments of the match, Juninho Bacuna's delivery almost caused Jacob Greaves to score an own goal.

Although Jean Michael Seri managed to get a powerful shot on goal that required Ruddy to make a big save, neither team took control of the game in the beginning. However, the home team was able to take the lead through a goal by Tufan that was surrounded by some controversy. This happened around the 25-minute mark.

Tufan was not included in the starting lineup for the past three games. However, during the latest match, he appeared near the far goalpost and managed to push the ball towards the net after Greaves, a defender, made a header from a corner.

Ruddy and his supporters strongly objected, arguing that the final connection was made by the arm of the Turkish player.

During the match, Tufan had the opportunity to improve Hull's situation by hitting the post before the first half ended. However, Venus seemed unhappy with his team's lack of ability to score and decided to make some changes by bringing in Paik Seung-ho, George Hall, Alex Pritchard, and Jay Stansfield before 60 minutes of play had passed.

Hull had the best chance of scoring again, when Jaden Philogene set up Fabio Carvalho, but unfortunately, he couldn't hit the mark.

When Jutkiewicz came onto the field, things shifted in the game. Despite only starting six times this season, he has managed to score four goals so far. It was his great positioning that allowed him to head in a precise cross from Alex Pritchard into the box. Jutkiewicz rose between Greaves and Alfie Jones and with a powerful header, scored a goal for the win.

If Norwich manages to win against Middlesbrough on Wednesday, Hull will unfortunately drop from their position in the play-off places due to the equaliser. However, this equaliser worked in favor of Birmingham, lifting them up to the 19th spot and giving them one point ahead of other teams struggling—Stoke, Huddersfield, and Queens Park Rangers.

During a radio interview with BBC Radio Humberside, Liam Rosenior, who serves as the head coach for Hull City, shared his thoughts.

I'm filled with a sense of defeat. This is the most enraged I've ever been, as we've squandered valuable points.

I'm extremely let down by the outcome since we had the opportunity to secure the game by halftime. However, we failed to show the necessary determination when presented with scoring opportunities, and this has happened before.

I'm not blaming anyone. I'm including myself in the group of people who need to be more ruthless. In our previous matches against Southampton, we should have been winning 4-0 at half-time. The same issue occurred in our game against Preston - we weren't able to finish the job.

The athletes on the field must achieve goals according to their positions. They possess the required skills, but they require additional confidence and a touch of daring in their actions.

During an interview with BBC Radio WM, Mark Venus - the current interim manager for Birmingham City - shared his thoughts.

This is a significant moment for our team. It puts an end to our losing streak after losing to strong opponents (Ipswich and Southampton). We persevered, struggled, and held on throughout the game, and we ultimately earned the outcome we worked hard for.

The substitutes provided us with motivation when they joined the game. They infused some new energy and we had a skilled player, Alex Pritchard, who made an impact. The Juke also entered the game, which gave our team a main scoring factor, and he has a history of scoring in this venue, so we commend him for that.

If we look at the upcoming game on Saturday, we have five matches to play within 16 days, therefore it's essential to continue utilizing our entire team.

Regarding the Hull goal potentially being scored with a handball:

I'm not sure why they weren't able to achieve that, but once again, the call was unfavorable towards our team. I'm optimistic that in the future games of the season, we will have a call that is favorable towards us.

The game has finished with Hull City obtaining a score of 1 while Birmingham City also achieved a score of 1.
