Launched in 1994, Four Weddings and a Funeral signaled the start of Grant and Richard Curtis' well-known partnership in romantic comedies. They later teamed up on films like Love Actually, Bridget Jones' Diary, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, and Notting Hill.

The movie helped propel both the actor and director's careers and was recognized as one of the "100 best British films" by Empire magazine, where it ranked 21st. It also made it onto Time Out magazine's list of the "100 greatest British films ever," coming in at 74th place.

Featuring Andie MacDowell in the role of Carrie, who captures Grant's heart, the narrative revolves around Charles, a charismatic single man facing challenges in his search for romance. Just when it appears that his fortune might improve after encountering Carrie, he discovers that she is ready to head back to America.

The story revolves around five various moments when the two characters continually encounter each other, leading Charles to face his emotions regarding her.

Boasting an outstanding 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the romantic comedy received nominations for both Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture at the 1995 Academy Awards.

Grant's character wasn't only adored by fans, who still post clips from the movie on TikTok, but he also received the Best Actor honor at the BAFTAs in 1995.

Over three decades after its debut, reviewers continue to celebrate the humor, both in the UK and internationally.

In his review for the Chicago Tribune, John Petrakis commented, "It's clever and ironic, insightful and observant, humorous and touching, both uplifting and sorrowful, all at once. This goes beyond what you'd expect from a romantic comedy; it's nothing short of a small miracle."

Michael Hutak contributed to the Sydney Morning Herald, stating, "Although the overwhelming cuteness is the only aspect that lives up to the buzz, all the other praises you've heard are accurate. Four Weddings and a Funeral is delightful, elegant, humorous, and clever, making it well worth the cost of admission."

Steven Rea from the Philadelphia Inquirer gave the film three and a half stars, stating: "Four Weddings and a Funeral is a unique movie that puts a smile on your face from the first moment and keeps it there. It includes some touching moments—one of which features a reading by W.H. Auden—that offer a nice balance all the way to the finish."

Four Weddings and a Funeral will be broadcast on BBC Three at 9 PM on Sunday, November 17, and you can watch it later on BBC iPlayer.
