Hugh Grant reveals Bridget Jones 4 will be 'very, very sad'

Bridget Jones 4 is set to be released on Valentine's Day 2025, and Hugh Grant has shared additional insights about what audiences can look forward to.

During his appearance on The Graham Norton Show on Friday night, the 64-year-old Notting Hill star expressed a lot of enthusiasm regarding the new sequel to the cherished romantic comedy featuring Renée Zellweger.

Nonetheless, if viewers were anticipating the side-splitting fun of the previous three movies, they might be in for a bit of a change.

The story resumes after Bridget's fairy tale ending, where she strolled into the sunset alongside her husband Mark Darcy (played by Colin Firth) while carrying their baby at the conclusion of the third movie.

We expected there would be some emotional scenes since the movie is inspired by Helen Fielding’s book Mad About The Boy. This story explores Bridget's experience of becoming a mother after losing Darcy. Hugh has now reassured us that the film will be "incredibly sad."

The actor from Four Weddings and a Funeral appeared in the first two Bridget Jones movies, but he didn't feature in the third installment because his character passed away in a plane crash while "going down in a bush." However, he has now made a surprising comeback in the fourth film, having been found somehow alive.

He also mentioned that Helen Fielding, the author and creator of the beloved character, used her personal experiences with loss and being a mother to develop the original idea that evolved into the fourth movie.

"It's truly a powerful and touching script, and I can say that as someone who's usually quite critical about scripts," he shared while sitting on the couch with Graham and fellow guests Neneh Cherry, Sebastian Stan, and Greg Davies.

"Helen Fielding experienced a difficult chapter in her life. She married an American screenwriter and they had kids together, but after his passing, she took on the responsibility of raising the children on her own," he said.

She began working on a novel centered around a woman who is raising her kids alone, coping with the loss of both her father and husband. Eventually, she recognized that the main character resembled Bridget, which led her to transform it into a Bridget Jones story. While it's filled with humor, it also carries a deep sense of sadness.

He went on to describe his participation: "From my perspective, there was really no need for Daniel Cleaver, but they were determined to fit me in. So we all got together to discuss it."

I've been a bit hard to please lately, and while I thought their suggestion was okay, it didn't really impress me. I felt the character needed more depth. Now that he’s in his sixties, he can't just be wandering down King’s Road looking at younger women.

"I thought their suggestion was acceptable but didn’t really stand out. So, I came up with a pretty decent temporary narrative," he joked.

In recent months, fans have been thrilled by glimpses of the upcoming movie, as the cast and crew have been spotted shooting scenes throughout London.

The movie will feature Leo Woodall, known for his standout performances in The White Lotus and One Day, in the role of Bridget’s younger romantic partner. This casting choice is sure to please fans who enjoyed his past roles in romantic films.

Hugh was recently spotted on set filming for the much-anticipated movie. He also generated excitement among fans when he shared with ET, “I truly believe that the script for the fourth Bridget is the strongest of all four. In fact, it's one of the finest scripts I've read in quite some time.”
