Gypsy Rose: The Definition

Gypsy Rose Blanchard, born on July 1, 1991, is a notorious American criminal who gained media attention by killing her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, in 2015. The case became a sensation since it was discovered Dee Dee had Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental disorder in which a caregiver exaggerates or makes up illness or injury in their child to gain sympathy or attention. As a result, Gypsy has spent much of her childhood convinced she was sick and confined to a wheelchair. However, Gypsy was completely healthy, and not even aware of her real age. Her tragic childhood ultimately led to a life behind bars.

The Netflix Documentary on Gypsy Rose

In 2019, a well-reviewed docu-series named "The Act" was produced by Hulu which dramatizes the story of Gypsy Rose and her mother. Moreover, the documentary titled "Mommy Dead and Dearest" was released in 2017, that looks deeper into the true account of Gypsy Rose and Dee Dee Blanchard. Furthermore, in March 2020, Netflix premiered the documentary series "The Trials of Gypsy Rose," which details the legal pursuits subsequent to Gypsy's murder conviction and her life in jail. All of these documentaries shows how Gypsy was manipulated, oppressed, and finally freed herself from the clutches of her mother to start a new life.
