Soho: The Groucho Club closes after 'serious crime' allegations

Groucho Club

The Groucho Club, one of the most well-known private clubs in London, has closed its doors after allegations of a "serious criminal incident" occurring on its property.

Westminster City Council announced that it has temporarily revoked the license of the Soho location in response to a request from the Metropolitan Police.

The private members club reportedly worked together with the council's licensing sub-committee, recognized the gravity of the accusations, and agreed to the outcome.

A complete hearing regarding the license will take place within 28 days after the police have filed the review application.

The Groucho Club opened its doors in 1985, offering a laid-back alternative to classic gentlemen’s clubs and has built a strong connection with high-profile celebrities ever since.

A representative from the council stated that the choice to suspend the license was made after receiving reports suggesting that a serious crime might have occurred at the location, which is connected to a violation of the licensing rules for the premises.

"They stated that the claims are currently under investigation by the police, and they are unable to provide any additional comments at this time."

The Met police stated that their probe into a "recent serious crime" is ongoing, so they can only share a few details for now.

It was mentioned that more details would be shared "when it becomes feasible."

It's clear that the information about the police investigation becoming public only occurred because the police needed to request the suspension of the club's license. The hearing for this matter was conducted behind closed doors.

The Groucho Club has been contacted for a response.
