Soho: The Groucho Club closes after 'serious crime' allegations
The Groucho Club, a well-known private members' club in London, has closed down after allegations surfaced regarding a "serious recent crime" occurring at the location.
Westminster City Council announced that it has put the Soho venue's license on hold following a request from the Metropolitan Police.
The private members club is reported to have worked alongside the council’s licensing sub-committee, recognized the gravity of the accusations, and agreed with the outcome.
A complete hearing regarding the license will take place within 28 days of the police filing the review request.
The Groucho Club opened its doors in 1985, serving as a laid-back alternative to conventional gentlemen's clubs, and has since been linked with numerous high-profile celebrities.
A representative from the council stated that the choice to suspend the license was made after receiving reports suggesting that a serious crime might have occurred at the location, potentially connected to a violation of the licensing rules for the premises.
"They mentioned that the claims are currently being looked into by law enforcement, and they are unable to provide any additional comments for now."
The Metropolitan Police stated that their inquiry into "a recent serious crime" is ongoing, so they can only share limited information at this time.
It stated that more information would be shared "as soon as it is feasible."
It's clear that the information about the police investigation becoming public was only disclosed because the police had to request the suspension of the club's license, and that hearing was conducted behind closed doors.
The Groucho Club has been contacted for a response.
