North East news RECAP: Commuters urged not to travel after cancellations and major delays on LNER trains
A man had to call the coastguard after his van became stuck in the sand at Tynemouth Haven,
HM Coastguard paged the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade after a member of the public reported that his van was stuck in the sand and was located below the high watermark.
This posed a potential environmental risk and risk to shipping had the vehicle been swept away by the incoming tide.
Six Brigade members arrived on scene and worked for around an hour using specialist equipment on our vehicle to recover the van, and also a boat it was trying to tow, to the road.
Once the recovery was complete, a Brigade Captain spoke extensively with the owner and explained that not only was the beach not an appropriate place to launch a boat using a van, but also that the boat did not appear to be seaworthy.
