Grace, ITV1, series 4, episode 1, review: John Simm's detective provides more thrills

Grace

Have you ever seen a drain cover and thought about the numbers on it? Personally, I haven't either. That's why we're lucky to have crime writers like Peter James delving into the darker parts of their minds to create intriguing stories that capture our interest.

Opening up a hidden drain cover that has been concealed for a long time was a significant moment in the latest season of Grace (ITV1), featuring a detective based in Brighton. The series is filled with thrilling crime-solving stories perfect for Sunday nights. Roy Grace, the detective, falls somewhere between Vera's down-to-earth nature and Endeavor's introspective thinking. He would be a typical cop if it weren't for the mystery surrounding his missing wife. But we'll delve into that topic later on.

There is a feeling that without John Simm in the lead role, Grace would just be another predictable cop show. Simm's portrayal of Grace is authentic and likable, turning the character into a refreshing detective who doesn't seek approval from viewers.

As Grace navigated through the complex storylines of Dead Man’s Time, which lightly touched on themes of family relationships, you couldn't help but hope he would defeat the villains and return to his new life with his expecting partner. You can't help but feel he deserves some joy in his life, but finding happiness may not be so simple in this dark and twisted world.

The show Dead Man’s Time took us on a journey through a family's past filled with lies and deceit, delving into deep philosophical questions as Gavin Daly (portrayed by Robert Glenister) learned that his idolized father was not who he thought he was. Grace, the character, pointed out that Gavin had been defending a man who was not real, bringing the story to a conclusion that left questions unanswered. But there's more to come about the disappeared wife.

The most vague connection between the stories of Grace has finally been revealed, with quick glimpses of the mysterious Sandy. She was seen in the background with a distressed expression, leaving us wondering what her motives are. This unanswered question has me intrigued and eager to learn more.
