Golden Globes 2025: Emilia Pérez scores 10 nominations as Kate Winslet, Selena Gomez and Sebastian Stan each take two

Golden Globes nominations

Following its impressive wins at the European Film Awards on Saturday, Jacques Audiard’s bold crime musical Emilia Pérez has made a strong impact in Hollywood by securing 10 nominations for the Golden Globes. These include categories for best comedy or musical, best director, and a nomination for its star, Karla Sofía Gascón.

In the movie, Gascón portrays a leader of a Mexican cartel who undergoes a gender transition to pursue her ambitions and escape the local mafia. If she succeeds, Gascón will make history as the first transgender performer to receive a Golden Globe for a film. This achievement would follow Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, who won the award three years ago for her performance in the television series Pose.

At the same time, Brady Corbet's grand postwar film, The Brutalist, features Adrien Brody in the role of a Hungarian Holocaust survivor who relocates to the United States to pursue a career in architecture. The film has received seven nominations, including nods for Corbet, Brody, and his co-star Felicity Jones.

Conclave, the papal thriller directed by Edward Berger, received recognition for its screenplay, direction, and leading performance by Ralph Fiennes, earning it a spot in third place with a total of six nominations. Meanwhile, the bold body horror film The Substance and the Cannes Palme d’Or winning film Anora each garnered five nominations.

Fiennes and Brody will compete for the top acting award alongside Daniel Craig for his role in Luca Guadagnino's Queer, Timothée Chalamet portraying Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, Sebastian Stan in the Trump biopic The Apprentice, and Colman Domingo in the prison drama Sing Sing.

Hugh Grant is also up for recognition for his standout performance as a provocative character in the horror movie Heretic. It's been thirty years since he last won a significant award—he took home the Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy or musical for his role in Four Weddings and a Funeral.

This year, Heretic is in the running for the comedy or musical award, putting Grant in competition with notable actors like Jesse Eisenberg for A Real Pain, Jesse Plemons for Kinds of Kindness, Gabriel LaBelle for Saturday Night, and Stan once more for A Different Man.

This isn't the first instance of an actor receiving nominations in both leading performance categories. For example, Kate Winslet achieved this in 2009, taking home the award for best leading actress in a drama for Revolutionary Road, as well as the supporting actress award for The Reader.

Winslet is vying for two awards this year, thanks to her performances in the biopic Lee about Lee Miller and in the HBO political satire The Regime. The television nominations were notably favorable for British and Irish actors, with Keira Knightley, Colin Farrell, Andrew Scott, Gary Oldman, Eddie Redmayne, and Ewan McGregor receiving recognition for their roles in Black Doves, The Penguin, Ripley, Slow Horses, The Day of the Jackal, and A Gentleman in Moscow, respectively.

The shift of prominent movie actors to streaming services and television was clearly shown by the inclusion of Harrison Ford, Cate Blanchett, Jodie Foster, Javier Bardem, and Jake Gyllenhaal among the nominees for TV awards. "The Bear" topped the list with five nominations, while "Shōgun" and "Only Murders in the Building" followed closely behind with four each.

Selena Gomez received a nomination for her role, which, along with Emilia Perez's two nominations for best supporting actress, brings the total number of double nominees this year to three. Steve Martin has been nominated for the same show for the fourth year in a row, making it his ninth nomination at the Globes, but he still hasn’t secured a win.

Even though Netflix had the highest number of nominations this year for both films and television shows, one of its standout series, Baby Reindeer, received just three nominations, which was somewhat underwhelming. Additionally, its popular adaptation of David Nicholls' novel One Day didn't get any recognition at all.

"Wicked," the musical that's currently dominating ticket sales, has garnered nominations for both its leading actress, Cynthia Erivo, and supporting actress, Ariana Grande. The show also gained recognition in the relatively new category for "cinematic and box office achievement." Similarly, "Gladiator II" received a nomination in the same category, with Denzel Washington being recognized for his supporting role—marking his 11th nomination overall.

Washington was behind the adaptation of August Wilson's The Piano Lesson, which many expected would earn nominations for Malcolm Washington's direction and standout performances by John David Washington and Danielle Deadwyler. However, it ultimately received no nominations at all.

Alongside Gascón, Erivo is up against notable contenders such as Amy Adams for Nightbitch, Mikey Madison for Anora, Zendaya in Challengers, and Demi Moore for The Substance. Moore's return to acting is reflected in the dramatic nominations, where Pamela Anderson also makes an appearance for The Last Showgirl. She competes against a lineup that includes Kate Winslet, Angelina Jolie for Maria, Tilda Swinton for The Room Next Door, Nicole Kidman for Babygirl, and Fernanda Torres for I’m Still Here.

However, Marianne Jean-Baptiste’s acting in Hard Truths and Saoirse Ronan’s role in The Outrun did not earn any acclaim. Additionally, Steve McQueen’s Blitz and Robert Eggers’s Nosferatu were also overlooked. Both September 5 and Nickel Boys had lower than anticipated performances, each receiving only one nomination, though it was in the best drama category.

They are up against Conclave, The Brutalist, and two movies starring Timothée Chalamet: A Complete Unknown and Dune: Part Two. Despite being a major hit in the sci-fi genre, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two didn’t get much love from the Golden Globe voters, receiving only one additional nomination for best original score. On the other hand, Wicked, Anora, Challengers, A Real Pain, The Substance, and Emilia Pérez are competing for the award for best musical or comedy.

On Monday, two new initiatives were revealed that indicate the Globes are working to establish themselves as serious competitors to the Oscars. This year, for the first time, the organizers are arranging a pre-awards lunch to honor their first-time nominees. The list of nominees includes Brody, Plemons, Anderson, Zoe Saldana, Seth Meyers, Richard Gadd, Kathryn Hahn, and Glen Powell.

They will hold a separate event to honor the winners of their lifetime achievement awards. During the main ceremony, there will be video clips showcasing Viola Davis and Ted Danson receiving their Cecil B. DeMille and Carol Burnett awards. This approach is similar to how the Academy Awards conducts their annual Governors Awards, which in 2024 honored Richard Curtis and Quincy Jones.

Last year’s Golden Globe Awards marked a significant change following the disbanding of the controversial Hollywood Foreign Press Association in 2023. The voting body was notably more diverse and inclusive than in the past. The film "Oppenheimer" dominated the event, winning five awards, while "Barbie," "The Holdovers," "Anatomy of a Fall," and "Poor Things" each secured two awards. Additionally, the host, Jo Koy, faced some of the most unfavorable reviews for an awards ceremony host in recent history.

This year's event will be led by comedian Nikki Glaser, who is also nominated for her stand-up special. The ceremony will take place on January 5, just a month and a half before the BAFTAs on February 16, which will once again be hosted by David Tennant. The Oscars will occur two weeks later, with Conan O'Brien stepping in as the host, replacing Jimmy Kimmel.
