Fresh Spain floods sweep away dozens of cars near Girona

Girona

Recent floods have struck the Girona area in northeastern Spain, reportedly sweeping away approximately 30 vehicles in the town of Cadaqués, as per local news sources.

A local reporter shared videos that captured a rush of water flowing down the street and a stack of vehicles obstructing a bridge early Friday morning.

There were no reports of injuries or deaths during the most recent flooding that affected the nation.

Over 200 individuals lost their lives last week, with the majority in the Valencia region, making it one of the most devastating floods to hit Europe this century.

The catastrophe sparked widespread anger towards the officials for failing to send out emergency warnings earlier.

Early Friday morning, flooding in Cadaqués led to approximately 30 cars becoming stuck beneath a bridge, as reported by Catalonia's fire service on X. Fortunately, there were no injuries or people trapped in the incident.

The area is forecasted to experience more hazardous weather conditions Friday night.

Catalonia's weather agency has put out a rain alert for the Alt Emporda region, including Cadaqués, starting Friday evening and continuing until Saturday afternoon. They cautioned that the rainfall could reach over 20 mm (0.7 inches) in just half an hour.

The agency noted that Cadaqués received 76.8 mm (3 inches) of rainfall on November 7 and 8, while two neighboring towns experienced over 100 mm of rain.

According to Aemet, Spain's meteorological agency, the country experienced a 72% increase in rainfall from October 1 to November 5 compared to the average amount typically seen during that timeframe.

The heavy rains, which specialists attributed to climate change, caused sudden floods that left individuals stuck in their vehicles.
