Residents of a housing community were shocked when a large sinkhole appeared on the road in front of their houses.
People living in Nant Morlais, Pant, Merthyr Tydfil are worried they might have to leave their homes due to a massive sinkhole that appeared on Sunday.
Approximately 30 houses in the neighborhood needed to be vacated, and the cul-de-sac was shut down following the emergence of a hole in the street and sidewalk.
The exact reason for the sinkhole hasn't been verified yet; however, a local council member shared with the BBC that they suspect a culvert—an infrastructure that lets water pass beneath roads—may have collapsed, leading to the formation of the large hole.
The Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council used social media to inform residents, stating: “Council staff and police have been present at Nant Morlais in Pant all morning, collaborating with other agencies to address a sinkhole situation.”
“At this moment, we don’t require any additional assistance, but we appreciate everyone who has extended their help. Our top priority is safety.”
"To ensure engineers can work safely, please avoid this area."
Stephen Regan, a 55-year-old resident of the area, expressed to the BBC his concerns about potentially losing his home, which is located very close to the sinkhole.
"It was incredibly frightening; you could hear the loud rumbling and crashing as it unfolded," he remarked.
"I really just want to return home, but we have no idea what's happening right now. I'm scared that my house might be in danger... I've never experienced anything like this before."
He guessed that the hole was about 60 feet deep, saying, “The drainage pipe has given way, and the water has eroded everything. The residents here are mostly older, so they are feeling frightened.”
