Sucker Punch Explains Why ‘Ghost Of Yotei’ Doesn’t Star Jin Sakai

Ghost of Yotei

The most unexpected announcement from yesterday's PlayStation State of Play event was the introduction of Ghost of Tsushima 2. However, the second biggest shock is that it's actually not Ghost of Tsushima 2 at all. Instead, it’s called Ghost of Yotei, featuring a fresh protagonist, a different setting, and a new historical period. But don’t worry—there are still plenty of sword fights!

Considering the affection that players have for the original game and their emotional connection to Jin Sakai and his journey, it was surprising to see the story shift to a new character, Atsu, who is a female Ronin. Regarding the decision to move away from Jin in Ghost of Yotei, Sucker Punch shared their thoughts in a blog post on PlayStation:

The article clarifies that this story occurs 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, which was set in Japan in 1603. Even so, we’re still wielding similar weapons to fight. During that time, there were fewer established samurai clans, and more wandering Ronin like Atsu appeared to be common.

Atsu will be portrayed by the talented Erika Ishii, taking on one of their most important roles to date. They are also set to lend their voice to Rook in the upcoming Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which is set to be released next month. I recognize Erika primarily from their role as Ana Bray in Destiny 2. Ishii has rapidly established themselves as one of the most in-demand voice actors in the business, comparable to established names like Nolan North and Troy Baker. The upcoming year is poised to be their most significant yet.

Ghost of Tsushima was my Game of the Year in 2020, so I'm eager to jump into Ghost of Yotei on day one—or even sooner if I can snag a review copy! I'm excited to see what Sucker Punch has accomplished with this game, which is designed specifically for the PS5. I hope it keeps the engaging combat and stunning visuals of the original while introducing some fresh ideas. As of now, we know that Yotei is set to release in 2025, and I'm hoping we'll get a more precise date in the near future. My guess would be in the fall.
