At first, the Russian team shot warning rounds close to the NATO surveillance plane that was performing routine patrols in the region.

Although signal ammunition is typically used to issue warnings rather than initiate direct assaults, some reports indicate that this occurrence suggests an intensification of the conflict in Ukraine.

Reports indicate that this situation suggests an increasing closeness between NATO and Russia, which might lead to a possible "direct confrontation," as noted by The Sun.

Russian naval vessels are moored at the port.

The minister did not provide any additional details about the event, as reported by the German newspaper Bild.

However, Baerbock stated that NATO would enhance its surveillance and safeguarding of essential infrastructure in light of news reports indicating that the Kremlin was intensifying its assaults in the Baltic Sea.

She posted online: "Putin is threatening our peace system with mixed assaults."

She revealed that Russian naval vessels are still navigating through the Baltic Sea to evade the sanctions that have been imposed on the country since 2022.

The foreign minister stated that there would be heightened surveillance of pipelines, data cables, and other critical infrastructure in the area to avoid future Russian assaults. This region has a history of substantial damage to cables and potential sabotage of GPS systems.

In November, two underwater cables were damaged in the span of just one day: one connecting Finland and Germany, and the other linking Sweden and Lithuania. This incident prompted German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius to raise suspicions of sabotage.

Due to concerns about the incident, Sweden, Germany, and Lithuania have started criminal investigations over the last week. Their attention is on the Chinese bulk carrier Yi Peng 3, which left Russia's Ust-Luga port two weeks prior.

Russia has refuted any claims of involvement in the damage to the cables.
