The Australian actor portrayed James Bond in the movie On Her Majesty's Secret Service in 1969. He is the only actor who is not British or Irish to play this role, and he also holds the record for being the shortest-serving lead in the franchise.

In a recent post on his official Instagram page, Lazenby revealed that he will be stepping away from both acting and making public appearances, as well as discontinuing interviews and autograph signings.

"I have come to a difficult decision, but I feel it is time to officially announce my retirement from my career," he stated.

"It's been an enjoyable journey, but aging isn't enjoyable."

Lazenby expressed gratitude to his manager of 11 years, describing them as the finest representative he has ever had. He shared his excitement about being able to focus on spending additional time with his family.

"I want to thank everyone for their love and support throughout the years. It really has meant so much to me."

Lazenby was a model when he got the chance to play Bond. He met producer Albert Broccoli in a barber shop, where Broccoli invited him to audition for the role.

He had the opportunity to come back to the job, but he said no after his representative mentioned that the spy character would appear old-fashioned in the 1970s.

He stayed in the entertainment business and appeared in several more movies, and then landed a role in the BBC's Play For Today TV series in 1973.

That year, he admitted that he struggled with alcoholism and had squandered all the money he earned from playing James Bond.

After that, he relocated to Hong Kong and acted in three movies for Bruce Lee's production company before his passing.
