Phil Collins' bandmate Mike Rutherford has issued a health updated on his former Genesis bandmate. The iconic musician suffered a spinal injury in 2007 and has struggled to perform since.

During Genesis' final show in March last year, fans were concerned about how frail he appeared. The 72-year-old performed on stage in a wheelchair and was unable to hold a drumstick due to lasting nerve damage.

Guitarist Mike appeared on BBC Breakfast yesterday (March 9) morning and spoke about Collins' current health. He said: "Phil is much more immobile than he used to be, which is a shame but at the tour, he was in good spirits and he’s fine now at home, enjoying life. He’s worked so hard over the years, I think he’s enjoying his time at home."

Collins's Genesis story is nothing short of iconic. He first joined the band in the 1970s as their drummer, behind then lead singer Peter Gabriel. However, Gabriel announced his shock departure from the already-well-known progressive rock group to pursue a solo career in 1975, with many assuming the band would dissipate without his charisma leading from the front.

After a long search for a replacement vocalist, Collins stepped in for studio sessions for new material and, eventually, agreed to take on the role full-time, starting with 1976 album A Trick of the Tail. With the new configuration, Genesis went from strength-to-strength, becoming one of the most popular bands of the late 1970s, the 1980s and early 1990s.

Genesis's international fame also allowed Collins to enjoy a successful solo career of his own, concurrently with his work with the band. He released eight studio albums between 1981 and 2010, while also producing and composing the music for Disney movies Tarzan and Brother Bear at the turn of the century.

However, in the last 10 years, he has suffered from a number of health issues, beginning with an injured vertebrae in his upper neck.

He sustained the injury while performing and it left him with nerve damage in his hands. After surgery to repair the vertebrae, he lost feelings in his fingers and could no longer grip drumsticks without support.

Genesis reunited for the last time for The Last Domino? tour last year after being forced to cancel shows during the pandemic. Collins' son, Nic Collins, took over playing the drums for his father on the tour.
