The last episode of popular TV show Gavin and Stacey will start filming at Barry Island, Wales, in the next few weeks and fans are eagerly anticipating the return of the show.
The creators Ruth Jones and James Corden announced earlier this year that they will be coming back for a special episode of the show, where they will all be playing their original characters for one last time to give the series a proper finale.
Information about the storyline is being kept under tight wraps, but fans are eager for it to finally shed light on the lingering mysteries that have bothered Gavin and Stacey fans for so long.
This covers things like: What happened during the fishing trip? Did Smithy accept the proposal? Will Bryn finally reveal their true self?
Brydon had a chat with Chris Evans on his morning show and mentioned that he got emotional after reading the script for the Christmas special. He mentioned that he read it a couple of months before the rest of the cast did and found it to be really moving. He said it was so good that it brought tears to his eyes.
He has also spoken about rumors regarding his character's sexuality, as well as the TV show subtly hinting at and joking about Bryn possibly being gay. These jokes often involve gay stereotypes, like his obsession with Desperate Housewives and Sex and the City, and Bryn's comments on Mick and Gavin's physical appearance.
The fishing trip mystery is believed to be connected to Bryn and his nephew, Jason, who are gay. They went on a fishing trip together and had a falling out afterward.
Brydon suggested that Bryn might be homosexual, saying that he wouldn't be shocked if he were gay. He speculated that perhaps Bryn has never acted on his feelings. The creators of Gavin & Stacey, James Corden and Ruth Jones, have not confirmed to Brydon whether Bryn is gay or not. Brydon noticed Bryn's admiration for Larry Lamb's character, Mick, adding that Bryn is an attractive man.
"I believe it's up to the viewers to make their own conclusions," he said.
As fans eagerly await the upcoming special, set to start filming in a mere two weeks, there is a sense of uncertainty surrounding the specifics. Many are hopeful that the show will finally include more LGBTQ+ representation, particularly in the form of Bryn, after years of hinting at it.
This upcoming Christmas special will mark the third time the show has aired a holiday episode, with the previous one being in 2019, which was nine years after the third series ended.
Gavin and Stacey faced backlash in 2019 because of a scene where Bryn and Nessa performed a duet of The Pogues’ ‘Fairytale of New York’. The song includes a derogatory term in the lyrics, leading to criticism of the show.
On screen, Corden's character Smithy excitedly exclaims "This is my favorite part!" and the camera shifts to Bryn singing the contentious lyrics.
This resulted in more than 900 complaints to OfCom about the offensive language. Initially, the BBC stood by its choice not to censor the slur, stating that it was not related to homosexuality. However, they eventually removed the slur from reruns of the show and from the episode available on BBC iPlayer.
