E India CEO Seeks Affordable Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Fossil fuel

Engineers India Ltd (EIL) wants to make cheap and environment-friendly aviation fuel. They are looking to expand in the biofuels field.

The company is collaborating with IIP-CSIR on SAF technologies. They're looking forward to the project with MRPL in Karnataka.

The chairman & managing director Vartika Shukla stated that EIL is focusing on the first project at MRPL. The project will show how the technology can be used commercially. The main challenge is proving that the technology is viable. This will make it easier to market in the future.

Shukla spoke to the media recently. He shared some observations. This happened during the interaction.

EIL won a contract last year for a design project. They will make a report and do pre-activities for MRPL's bio-ATF plan. The facility uses oils that are not food and used cooking oil. This is a new type of facility in India. EIL and CSIR-IIP developed the technology.

SAF is a type of fuel made from non-fossil sources. It includes biofuels and e-fuels which are better for the environment. This is different from traditional jet fuel (ATF). SAF can be made from recycled waste or synthetic fuel. However, it's more expensive than regular jet fuel. According to IATA, it can be up to five times more expensive.

Shukla discussed the National Biofuels Policy. He stated that 1G ethanol has a low production cost, so it can be blended with gasoline at a low price. Unfortunately, SAF doesn't have this advantage.

Shukla said that there needs to be VGF or a capex subsidy. This can happen after corrections to the SAF policy. This will encourage investments.

She said that the technology might become mature enough to decrease production expenses, investment costs, and help determine sustainable fuel. This would benefit the industry.

EIL makes 60% of its money from oil & gas. They want to do new things because the world is changing to new and renewable energy.

The company will improve their R&D for green hydrogen generation. They will use this to do projects for their clients.
