North West: Yellow weather warning for fog across region
Drivers and travelers are advised to be cautious due to high fog that may impact journeys throughout the North West on Monday.
A yellow weather alert issued by the Met Office will take effect at 5:00 AM BST on Monday and is projected to remain in place until 10:00 AM.
The Met Office has cautioned that we may experience one of the first instances of widespread fog forming overnight in autumn 2024, lingering into the morning.
It was mentioned that certain areas of fog may be "fairly thick," which could lead to longer travel times and potential interruptions in bus services.
A representative from the Met Office advised drivers to assess the road conditions before heading out. They also suggested allowing additional time for their trip or adjusting their plans if needed.
"The spokesperson emphasized the importance of knowing how to turn on your fog lights and ensuring they are functioning properly before you begin your trip."
Bus, train, flight, and ferry services may also be impacted, so travelers should contact their travel provider for the latest information.
The Met Office has shared important tips for those who will be driving in fog:
Be familiar with the location of the fog light switch before you start your journey.
Maintain a larger gap than normal between your vehicle and the one ahead of you.
Stay alert for unexpected thick fog or areas with varying patches of mist.
Take a look at your mirrors and reduce your speed before driving into foggy conditions.
Turn on your fog lights when you can see less than 100 meters ahead, which is about the same distance as a football field.
Avoid using high beam headlights because the fog will bounce the light back at you.
After the fog clears, remember to turn off the fog lights.
The alert is in effect for the areas of Blackburn with Darwen, Cheshire East, Cheshire West and Chester, Greater Manchester, Halton, Lancashire, Merseyside, and Warrington.
