56 min: The second half hasn't really gained momentum so far. It's definitely not as fast-paced and open as the first half was.
54 minutes: A quick corner from the right is passed back to Moore, who makes a diagonal dash into the penalty area. Ramírez tries to trip him up, but instead of taking the foul, Moore opts to push forward for a shot. Unfortunately, he ends up running the ball out of play for a goal kick.
53 minutes: Porro sends a careless cross from the right side. Cissé deflects it out for a corner kick. One set piece follows another, and...
52 minutes in: Oh, great! We can now see almost the entire field again. Wonderful!
51 minutes in: The match resumes, and the players are starting to become visible once more.
49 minutes in: The corner kick doesn't lead to anything. I'm pretty confident about that... although now the whole field is filled with dense smoke from flares. It's like a total whiteout. The referee pauses the game to let the smoke dissipate.
48 minutes into the game, Saldanha moves in from the left side and takes a shot that curves toward the bottom right corner. It looks like it's going to go in, but Vicario manages to deflect it around the post, resulting in a corner kick. That was an impressive save.
47 minutes in: Barnabás Varga almost races past Romero on the right side. He gets close, but not close enough. Romero maintains his position.
The Spurs kick off the second half without any substitutions. “Prior to Big Ange’s arrival, it was simple to monitor scoring opportunities since Tottenham struggled to create them,” explains Yash Gupta. “Now, when Spurs miss a chance, instead of blaming the players, I find myself anticipating another opportunity shortly after. At times, Angeball feels almost transcendent, and it’s truly amazing.”
Half-Time: Ferencváros 0, Tottenham 1
That went by quickly. The Spurs are ahead in an exciting match, but their advantage comes from a somewhat questionable offside decision that denied the home team a goal.
Let’s give that another try...
The goal scored by Ferencváros was ruled out, but it appears the home team wasn't as unfortunate as it seemed. UEFA has now shared video of the VAR review, and even though Adama Traoré was clearly offside in the center, he didn't influence the play. Barnabás Varga's knee was slightly offside as well, meaning the goal would have been disallowed regardless.
Half Time: Ferencváros 0, Tottenham 1
That went by quickly. The Spurs are ahead in a game that had plenty of chances, but they got a bit of luck from a questionable offside decision that denied the home team a goal.
In the 45th minute, Sarr plays a quick pass to Moore, who dashes into a little bit of room on the right side. He delivers a quick cross, which is deflected out for a corner kick. Porro takes the corner from the right, and although Traore manages to partially clear it, Gray quickly responds with a low shot from 25 yards that nearly sneaks into the bottom-left corner of the net. Dibusz stays alert and makes a good save despite the crowd of players around him.
At the 44-minute mark, Abu Fani knocks Porro down with a forceful elbow. There have been less severe incidents that warranted a player being sent off, but the referee opts for just a free kick instead. Porro lines up to take the kick from the right, about 30 yards away. He sends it toward the far post, but Davies gets called for pushing against his opponent.
42 minutes: Sarr is back on his feet and moving again.
41 minutes: However, this has taken a toll, as Sarr is now on the ground and asking for medical attention.
40 minutes in: Sarr delivers a strong challenge on Traore. It's flawlessly timed and hits like a freight train at 101 mph, prompting a massive cheer from the Spurs fans that rivals the excitement from the earlier goal.
38 min: Saldanha sprints into plenty of open space on the left and delivers a low cross for Traore, who sends his shot narrowly wide to the left. He definitely should have tested Vicario at the very least.
37 min: This match is absolutely ridiculous—in the best way! There’s an exciting attacking play combined with some comical defensive errors.
35 minutes: The referee briefly reviews a potential penalty for the challenge on Porro. There was definitely some contact—Saldanha carelessly stuck out a leg—but Porro got back up right away and didn’t ask for a call, which might have influenced the VAR’s decision. Shortly after, there’s more chaos in the home team's penalty area. Moore was pushed aside while going for a high ball, and Lankshear gave away a free kick after colliding with the goalkeeper.
At 33 minutes into the game, Porro confidently moves down the right side and makes a powerful attempt at the ball from far out. It strikes Ramírez and goes out for a corner kick. Taking the corner, Porro cuts in from the right, avoiding a tackle from Saldanha and remaining upright. He skillfully slips the ball through Abu Fani's legs and sends a low, curling shot that hits the inside of the left post!
32 minutes in: The Spurs take control of the game, settling things down with some unproductive possession.
30 minutes in: Gartenmann sends a low cross into the Spurs area from the right side. Vicario comes out to take it. There hasn’t been much action in the midfield during this game.
At the 29-minute mark, Saldanha gets a bit annoyed with Bergvall's tight marking and almost throws an elbow at him. Fortunately, it doesn't hit its target, and they quickly patch things up. The referee cautions both players to keep their cool.
27 minutes in: The Spurs earn another corner, with Bergvall sending it in from the left side. This time, Barnabás Varga almost sets Saldanha free for a clear shot at the goal. The game is wide open, with the ball moving freely from one end of the pitch to the other in an exhilarating fashion. It’s a refreshing and thrilling display of old-school, carefree football.
25 minutes in: Spurs earn a corner, but Traoré takes control and makes a run down the left. Gray intervenes and takes the ball away from him, starting a fast break for Spurs. The play concludes with Sarr launching a powerful shot from far out, right into the goalkeeper's hands. It's clear that this match won't finish with a score of 0-1.
Spurs Score! Ferencváros 0-1 Sarr's Goal
What a surprising twist! Despite the home team having the upper hand, Spurs have taken the lead unexpectedly. Moore dribbles in from the right side, aiming to pass to Lankshear in the penalty area. There’s a flurry of action as the ball bounces around, hitting Bergvall, who has gone to ground. This sets up Sarr perfectly, and he calmly takes a touch near the right side of the six-yard box before rolling the ball past Dibusz into the net.
In the 22nd minute, Ćivić receives a yellow card for pulling down Moore while he was in the air. As a result, he will be unavailable for Ferencváros’s upcoming game in this tournament.
In the 20th minute, Civic moves in from the byline on the left side of the goal and sets up a chance for Barnabas Varga, who sends a powerful shot toward the net from eight yards out. Vicario pulls off an amazing save, a top-notch reflex stop, but it’s all for nothing as the offside flag is raised. Ferencváros seem dangerous every time they push forward.
Goalless Draw: Ferencváros And Spurs End 0-0
18 min: … however, there’s a prolonged VAR review for an offside call. Barnabás Varga looks over at the linesman. He's aware that Adama Traoré, positioned in the center, was undoubtedly offside. The question is whether he was actively affecting the game and distracting Vicario. VAR determines that he was. No goal stands. That's a favorable ruling for Spurs.
Ferencváros Edges Spurs 1-0 With Varga Goal
Ćivić finds some room on the left and sends a long pass towards Barnabás Varga, who is sprinting in from the right. Varga redirects the ball with a downward header, sending it diagonally past Vicario and into the bottom left corner of the net. It looks effortless, but it's still a magnificent goal.
14 min: The Spurs have settled in nicely after a rocky beginning. They’re getting comfortable on the field, which is especially important since the ground is soaked through.
In the 12th minute, Sarr finds some room near the edge of the Ferencváros box. He creates the opportunity for himself with a clever maneuver. He unleashes a powerful low shot aimed at the goal, but it goes directly to Dibusz, the goalkeeper for Ferencváros. Dibusz manages to deflect the shot, and his teammates quickly clear the ball away.
In the tenth minute, Werner skillfully maneuvers past Traoré on the left side and delivers a cross. Lankshear, positioned just six yards from the goal, really should have tested the goalkeeper, but as he lunges for the ball, he can only manage to send it over the crossbar with his shoulder. It was a significant opportunity for the young player making his debut.
In the 9th minute, Spurs make their first offensive move, with Porro sending in a low cross from the right side. Unfortunately, neither Lankshear nor Werner can get to it. Spurs push forward again, this time through Moore on the right. His sharp low shot is cleared away by Gartenmann.
In the 8th minute, Traoré dribbles in from the right side and bends a shot aimed at the bottom left corner. It's a straightforward save for Vicario.
In the 7th minute, Gartenmann makes a quick run down the inside-right path and seems to be knocked down by Bissouma. He appeals for a free kick just outside the penalty area, but the referee denies the request. Upon reviewing the replays, it becomes clear that the referee made the right call, as Bissouma merely nudged the ball away with a light touch.
6 min: Ferencváros has been controlling the ball for most of the match so far.
At the four-minute mark, Abu Fani sends a beautiful diagonal pass across to Traoré on the right side. Traoré could have run into the penalty area but chooses to pass the ball to Barnabas Varga, who is positioned just outside the Spurs' penalty box. Varga takes a shot without taking a touch, but it goes too high and sails over the crossbar. This serves as an early alert for Spurs, as their defense appears alarmingly vulnerable.
In just three minutes, Porro makes a mistake by mishandling the ball in his own defensive zone, leading to the first corner kick of the night. Abu Fani takes the corner, aiming for the near post, but Bissouma steps in to clear it away. The guests seem to be a bit on edge as the match begins.
Just a quick note: Gray is positioned as a center back tonight, while Porro is taking on the role of right back.
The game begins with the home team starting play. There's an amazing vibe at Ferencváros Stadion, even though it's been raining heavily for the past day and shows no signs of letting up.
The teams have taken the field! Ferencváros is donning their green and white uniforms, so Spurs have opted for their green third-choice kit instead of the blue second-choice one. The description that accompanies the shirt explains that these green outfits “honor innovative female artists in Tottenham, with the design featuring a pattern inspired by the Seven Sisters elm trees.” It’s incredible how creative ideas can flow when you have an empty canvas and everyone else from work is already at the pub.
Ange Postecoglou shared with TNT Sports that the younger players are up to the challenge. "They've been part of the team since the start of pre-season, so they're fully integrated into our squad. Mikey has had a few chances to come off the bench, and we’ve really wanted to give them some playing time, and tonight seems like the perfect opportunity. I’m confident they can hold their own. I have no hesitation in putting them out there. They've earned their place, and I believe they’ll perform well. The best way to maintain our momentum is to utilize the entire squad, and I’ve chosen a lineup tonight that I believe can deliver results."
Pre-match insights. “The home team is kicking things off with a Civic, while the away team has an Austin on the bench. In terms of vehicle performance, Ferencvaros is expected to get more advantage from this game compared to Spurs.” That’s some clever commentary from Peter Oh. For those unfamiliar with cars, the Civic is a widely favored sedan produced by Honda, and the Austin can be better understood through this collection of exciting visuals.
Let’s take a moment to recall what transpired around this time last week, when the situation for Spurs could have taken a turn for the worse, but ultimately didn’t. Overall, it has been a positive week for Dominic Solanke.
The Tottenham starting lineup is incredibly young, making it really thrilling to watch. Ange has selected 18-year-old right-back Archie Gray, 18-year-old playmaker Lucas Bergvall, 17-year-old winger Mikey Moore, and 19-year-old striker Will Lankshear, who is making his debut. As they say in N17, "To dare is to do."
Ferencvaros lineup includes Dibusz, Gartenmann, Cisse, Raul Gustavo, Ramirez, Abu Fani, Maiga, Traore, Saldanha, Civic, and Barnabas Varga. The substitutes are Adam Varga, Ben Romdhane, Pesic, Kady, Zachariassen, Botka, Szalai, Makreckis, Gruber, Toth, Rommens, and Misidjan.
Tottenham Hotspur: Vicario, Porro, Romero, Gray, Davies, Sarr, Bissouma, Bergvall, Werner, Lankshear, Moore. Substitutes: Forster, Austin, Maddison, Solanke, Kulusevski, Johnson, Bentancur, van de Ven, Dorrington, Cassanova, Ajayi.
Official: Igor Pajac (Croatia).
Last week, the Spurs secured a victory against Qarabağ despite being one player down. Now, the question is whether they can take down Ferencváros with their full squad. We'll find out shortly. This match will be a significant experience, not just for Spurs, who haven't faced the renowned Hungarian team before, but especially for Ange Postecoglou. He once played under the legendary Ferenc Puskás at South Melbourne. The action kicks off at 5:45 PM BST. Let’s go!
