F1 2024 standings as Red Bull and Verstappen finally toppled

F1 standings

McLaren has climbed to the top of the Formula 1 constructors' championship for the first time in ten years, thanks to an impressive victory by Oscar Piastri.

Piastri and his teammate Lando Norris have been steadily closing the gap on Red Bull's lead in the constructors' standings since the second half of the season. A thrilling race in Baku marked a turning point for them, as they achieved something they hadn't done since early 2014.

F1 RESULTS TODAY: A thrilling race concludes with a major crash, leading to a shift in the championship standings.

The impressive performance at the beginning of 2014 was short-lived, lasting only one race. Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button achieved second and third places in the season opener, allowing them to take the lead in the standings. However, they quickly fell off, and neither driver managed to secure another podium finish for the remainder of the year.

This time, however, their period at the forefront is expected to last longer. Piastri has been the top performer in terms of points over the last eight races, and Norris has been steadily closing in on Max Verstappen’s lead in the drivers' championship, making him the closest competitor.

On the other hand, Verstappen hasn't claimed a victory since the race in Barcelona back in June, and he's only made it to the podium two times in the last seven races. As for his teammate, Sergio Perez, he hasn't been on the podium since he finished third in China in April.
