According to former F1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve, Sergio Perez is unlikely to secure a spot at Williams due to his recent difficulties at Red Bull.
The driver from Mexico has had a tough few months, only earning 15 points in his last six races. Team boss Christian Horner has acknowledged that the 34-year-old's performance is not sustainable at the moment.
In the midst of rumors that Perez, who recently signed a contract extension until the end of 2025, could be replaced during the season, the Mexican driver lost control during Q1 and crashed, resulting in a 16th place starting position for the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday.
Former world champion Villeneuve, who has been vocal about his opinions on Daniel Ricciardo recently, stated during a discussion about Williams's driver selection for 2025 that he does not believe Perez should be considered.
Villeneuve mentioned that Sergio Perez may no longer be capable of winning races as frequently as before.
Williams require a standout driver to elevate the team's performance, and I don't believe that Perez is the right fit for that role.
There are rumors swirling that Carlos Sainz may join Williams as the second driver next season. Team boss James Vowles has expressed his interest in having Sainz as his top choice to drive alongside Alex Albon, potentially replacing Logan Sargeant.
"I will do whatever I can to secure Carlos Sainz's signature, offer him a substantial amount of money over five years to create a long-lasting plan to return to victory at Williams," Villeneuve stated.
"If the team is ready to spend that amount of money, then Sainz will have trust in the team's vision and strategy."
On the other hand, Perez has failed to make it out of the first qualifying session in four of the last six races.
The three drivers, Ricciardo, Yuki Tsunoda, and reserve driver Liam Lawson, are all being considered as potential replacements for Perez.
Perez expressed his regret following his accident on Saturday, stating: "I am feeling very disappointed. It is painful to disappoint my entire team, but ultimately, I am more determined than ever to bring our team back to its rightful place."
Tomorrow's task is going to be huge, with a lengthy race awaiting us. I must block out all distractions and concentrate on the task at hand. We're in desperate need of a swift change.
Lando Norris claimed the top spot in qualifying for McLaren, with his teammate also securing a strong position on the grid. Max Verstappen, who races alongside Perez, came in third place.
