Everton: 'We have to look at ourselves in the Mirror' - Coleman
Seamus Coleman, the captain of Everton, stated that he and his fellow teammates need to reflect on their performance after a shocking 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth.
Michael Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored to give the Blues a 2-0 lead going into the 87th minute.
But when Antoine Semenyo scored a goal, the home team's defense fell apart. Lewis Cook and Luis Sinisterra added more goals for the away team during extra time, leaving Goodison Park in shock.
Coleman expressed disappointment in our performance in front of our supporters.
"We need to keep pushing at this level. Regrettably, we let up. We can't allow those goals to happen. We have to reflect on our performance."
Calvert-Lewin and summer addition Iliman Ndiaye showed great skill during the game, helping Everton control the match completely. They missed many opportunities to score, which would have put them far ahead before the surprising ending.
As the visiting players and fans celebrated, the Everton supporters endured another disappointing afternoon. Their team has now let in 10 goals this season and lost their first three top-flight games for the second year in a row.
"We were doing well until they scored their first goal," said Everton manager Sean Dyche in an interview with BBC Match of the Day.
The situation was under control, but we let it slip away. After giving up one goal, we lost our momentum. I can't figure out the exact reason just yet. Instead of taking action, everyone was expecting someone else to step up, which caused issues. It was clear that the team's attitude changed.
Dyche successfully kept Everton in the Premier League during the 2022-23 season and led them to a 15th place finish in his first complete season as manager, despite the team being penalized eight points for breaking financial rules.
He has had to deal with a very small amount of money to work with and has at times seemed very frustrated, such as on Saturday, when he described it as the most disappointing loss in his 13 years as a manager.
"I've experienced some setbacks in my time as a player, coach, and manager, but this one is particularly frustrating. It's disappointing to control a game for so long and not come out with any reward," Dyche explained.
We didn't finish the game strong, plain and simple. It was because we didn't put in the effort, win our tackles and races.
"After the first goal, I could sense that something wasn't right. I urged my team to stay organized and focus on the hard work, but unfortunately, we didn't do that and ended up losing unexpectedly."
After limiting Bournemouth to only one shot on goal in the first 86 minutes, by the end of the game, that number had increased to seven, with Everton goalie Jordan Pickford having to make a few impressive saves.
During an interview on BBC Radio 5 Live, Danny Murphy, a retired midfielder who previously played for Liverpool and England, commented on Everton's performance, stating that they were disorganized and chaotic on the field with huge gaps in their play.
There are many factors at play in that performance. When things start to go wrong, doubt can creep in and affect not only your own belief in yourself, but also in your teammates. Additionally, a lack of leadership on the team can contribute to the overall struggle, especially when there are experienced players present on the field.
Ex-Brighton striker Glenn Murray commented: "Everton won't be happy. There seems to be a vulnerability at Goodison Park."
