Europa League new format explained: Everything you need to know for 2024/25

Europa League

The Europa League is returning for the 2024/25 season, and there are a number of updates to this year's tournament that you should be aware of.

In the past, some major European clubs dismissed the continent's secondary tournament as insignificant. However, recent achievements and the added benefit of the winners securing a spot in the Champions League have increased its prestige.

This year, Manchester United and Tottenham are the only Premier League teams participating in the tournament. With a competitive battle for a top-four finish anticipated, both clubs will be eager to secure a victory.

This year marks a first as there will be no group stage; instead, all 36 teams will compete in a single league format.

Teams no longer need to be concerned about larger clubs being relegated from the Champions League since that system has been eliminated.

Understanding The New Europa League Format

Under the new format, each team will compete in eight matches during the league stage – four at their own venue and four on the road – facing eight unique rivals, with two teams drawn from each of the four seeded groups.

The eight highest-ranked teams will secure a spot in the round of 16 without needing to compete further, while teams ranked from ninth to 24th will face off in a play-off to earn their place in that round.

Any team that ends the season in 25th place or lower will be dropped from all European tournaments.
