UEFA Euro 2024: Who has qualified? How do the play-offs work and who is guaranteed a spot? - Eurosport

Euro 2024

During the October international break, England and Scotland both secured their spots at UEFA Euro 2024.

The countries nearby completed the task early and efficiently, even though there are still two additional game days in November.

Currently, only nine out of the 24 Euro 2024 spots have been secured. However, the remaining places are still up for grabs as the qualifying phase nears its end.

Across Europe, various teams are still competing to secure a spot within the top two in their respective groups. By doing so, they will guarantee their participation in Germany next summer.

However, the upcoming play-offs will give one final opportunity to three teams that do not manage to advance through the conventional pathway.

It's a suitable moment to inquire about the teams that have secured a spot in Euro 2024, as well as how the play-offs function. Let us elaborate.

How Many Teams Make It To UEFA Euro 2024?

The UEFA European Championship will feature a total of 24 teams, with each group consisting of four teams.

As the nation that is hosting the event, Germany is the solitary team that has qualified automatically.

20 teams will directly qualify for the Euro 2024 qualifiers. This means that the top two teams from each of the 10 qualifying groups will secure a spot in the tournament.

This means there are three spots left, and these will be claimed by the champions of the qualification games connected to the 2022/23 UEFA Nations League. We will discuss this in more detail shortly.

Play-offs: How They Work & Who Qualifies

12 teams will face off in the play-offs, divided into three categories of four teams each - one for Leagues A, B, and C, depending on how well they performed during the 2022/23 UEFA Nations League matches.

At first, the four spaces were assigned to the winners of the groups in every League. However, since the Nations League group winners successfully qualify through the standard method, the empty spots will be given to the team with the following best ranking in their League.

The nations that won the League A groups were Italy, Spain, Croatia, and the Netherlands.

The winners of League B were Israel, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Scotland. Meanwhile, League C saw Georgia, Greece, Turkey, and Kazakhstan emerge victorious in their respective groups.

This implies that before the Euro 2024 qualifiers started, those 12 teams were promised a place in the play-offs. However, Spain, Scotland, and Turkey have now secured an automatic invitation, indicating that there will be modifications made when choosing the play-off paths.
