Euro 2024 qualifying, Scotland’s VAR outrage, England v Australia, WSL: football news – live

Euro 2024

As a non-enthusiast of rugby, I find myself quite thrilled for the upcoming weekend. I can only imagine how dedicated supporters or those born in Ireland must feel. Here's some great news for the French team who are set to compete against the reigning champions, South Africa.

In different updates, the World Cup is in need of a tight match, but it seems like it won't happen for at least another day.

To keep the blog going, I have a further thought on last night's unfair decision regarding the McSauce goal. It seems to me that if the call was made due to offside, the referee should have awarded an indirect free kick. It looked like he gave a direct free kick for a non-existent foul, despite ignoring Dykes being forcefully brought down. The explanation of it being for offside seems like an excuse after the fact to save face. And no, I'm not still upset about it... well, maybe a little.

“What a terrible decision, and it happened during a night full of terrible decisions (a shoulder charge to McGinn’s head didn't receive a foul, but Patterson got booked for placing his hand on a Spanish player's shoulder). Spain had the upper hand, definitely; however, it's the sense of unfairness that lingers, not the loss itself.”

I notice that we're still discussing it. Although I wasn't able to witness the game in real-time, was the referee's verdict not in line with the rules, after all? Despite their flawed implementation, I can't help but wonder if there's something that I'm overlooking with regards to the final call.

Looking at the bright side, VAR has provided better understanding and decreased disagreements, which was advertised from the start.

Although it may seem repetitive, Scotland's coach Steve Clarke has stated that it is pointless to continue discussing Scott McTominay's disallowed goal.

I have additional information from Pennsylvania regarding the upcoming selection of Danny Rohl.

According to the PA news agency, Sheffield Wednesday is set to introduce Danny Rohl as their new manager this Friday. Rohl previously served as an assistant coach for teams like RB Leipzig, Southampton, Bayern Munich, and the German national team. This will be his first role as a head coach. The team sacked their former manager, Xisco Munoz, last week. Rohl will become the 11th permanent manager for Sheffield Wednesday in the last 12 years. The team, currently at the bottom of the championship, ended their last game in a draw against Huddersfield, but they still have not won a game after 11 matches.

According to Michael Raw, Riley McGree is the most outstanding Australian playing in England. Raw believes that McGree has been playing exceptionally well with Middlesbrough in the championship, but unfortunately, is currently injured.

I am hoping that Jordy Bos will have the opportunity to play for a few minutes. He performed impressively during the friendly match against Australia a couple of months back.

Jacob Steinberg has provided a new report regarding the ongoing consequences of the Premier League's response to the conflict between Israel and Hamas. It's clear that this issue is not going to be resolved quickly and will continue to be a topic of discussion.

According to Steve Waterhouse, his most beloved match would have to be the time England triumphed against Argentina with a score of 3-2 in Geneva back in 2005. During that match, Ledley King played as centre mid. England was initially down by 2-1, but thanks to Paul Konchesky's impressive performance, they were able to make a comeback. Moreover, Michael Owen's remarkable skills earned them a couple of goals as well. It's worth noting that Argentina's team was truly impressive. During that game, England's fullbacks were comprised of Luke Young, Wayne Bridge, and the aforementioned Konchesky.

When Eriksson's team let loose and played more aggressively, they performed exceptionally well.

Hey, it's a pretty calm day today. There's not much action going on, but I have managed to gather a few noteworthy statements from Scotland's Scott McKenna regarding their loss against Spain. While they're not exactly life-altering phrases, they might be able to occupy your time for a minute or two.

We should avoid fixating on it. It is clear that we have the power to control the situation by winning our next two qualifiers and even secure the top position in our group. This is what we need to focus on, and of course, the result of Spain and Norway's game on Sunday can also work in our favor.

Although we would have preferred to play against Spain ourselves, we will be tuning in to watch the game on Sunday. Hopefully, this will benefit us in some way.

We put in a great deal of effort in the initial five matches without any defeat. Though it was disheartening, we still accomplished several positive aspects within the group up until now.

Despite the outcome, we can still find good aspects in the way we defended during most of the match. The cancellation of the free-kick was a crucial moment that energized their supporters and gave them momentum.

I was informed about a call made by the referee, but I'm uncertain if it was due to an offside infraction or a violation against our goalkeeper. The decision seemed to be a close one. Although it went in their favor, the initial goal we surrendered was disheartening, particularly after being successful in our defensive efforts for a significant part of the game.

We need to gather our strength and prepare ourselves because there are still a lot of opportunities for us to compete in the group.

Tom Hopkins recalls attending a friendly match against England at Stade de France in 2000. He vividly remembers the audible sigh that echoed through the stadium when Dennis Wise recklessly kicked Zidane. Hopkins suggests that Wise should have been more aware of the situation and the audience's expectations, as no one paid to see him commit such misconduct.

Check out the aggressive move by Wise as he aimed for Zidane. Can you imagine what he was thinking in his head while preparing for the hit?

Karl Gibbons recounts the beloved memory of his first encounter with the football team he cheers for, Manchester United v Aston Villa in Belfast. This was back in 1992/93 when travelling internationally for pre-season was not yet a common practice. The players simply crossed over the Irish Sea for the match, perhaps even indulging in a few drinks afterwards. It was a fun and unforgettable experience for him.

My father and I stood at the base of the pathway, anticipating a ride from his companion who drove us to the stadium. There was an abundance of sound, and it was my initial encounter of seeing a genuine football field lit up by floodlights. I was thrilled in a manner that was scarcely matched ever since. I recollect Gary Pallister being the largest human being I had ever laid my eyes on, and Ryan Giggs being the quickest. Man Utd emerged as the victors, so everything was perfect in the universe.

It's impossible to return to the past!

I suppose it's possible to do some shopping there. Did United emerge victorious without question? I have a faint memory of a tie with Villa during that period, but I believe it was merely an exhibition match played after the regular season had ended.

In the event that you haven't caught sight of it yet, this is the goal by Scott McTominay that was not counted, causing Scotland a great deal of distress.

According to the most recent Sky Sports News update, Sheffield Wednesday is likely to hire a youthful German coach named Danny Rohl as their new manager. Rohl, who is only 34 years old, has gained experience as an assistant coach at various clubs such as RB Leipzig, Southampton, and Bayern Munich. In fact, he is even younger than Julian Nagelsmann.

Lawrence Thompson shared that he stayed in Hong Kong for three years and made some amazing friends by attending all of the HK home games, which were reasonably priced at around £10. In 2014, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the HKFA, they reportedly spent a whopping $3.5 million to have a friendly game against the Argentinian FA.

The game was a complete disaster. It cost ten times what it should have and our team lost 7-0. However, there was one moment of greatness in the 76th minute when Christian Annan made an impressive move and passed the ball to Karikari who had a clear shot at the goal. The crowd went wild and cheered louder than when Messi, who scored a goal later, came on the field with just 10 minutes remaining in the game.

I will always remember that thrilling moment when both teams' supporters were cheering together during an unusual match. The electric atmosphere made a lasting impression on me.

Matt Dony recalls one of his most memorable football matches, which surprisingly isn't his favorite but still holds a special place in his heart. The match was Wales vs Argentina in 2002, which ended in a draw of 1-1 and was considered seismic. As a Wales fan, Dony admits that the team has been fortunate in recent years, but before the upsurge, it was a period of little success. However, around 2002, everything began to fall into place, and the team started to enjoy a few victories, such as competitive wins against Italy and friendly victories over Germany. Nonetheless, the Argentina match stands out as a pinnacle moment.

Veron played exceptionally well (he's a really good player and all), however, Robbie Savage was named as the player of the match. Hartson was very difficult for the other team to handle. Bellamy was constantly moving and earned his goal. Simon Davies was as graceful and skilled as always. Looking back, it wasn't as successful as we thought and nobody wants to return to the Millennium Stadium. Nevertheless, during that time, although we had to watch the 2002 World Cup from a distance, it felt like a remarkable period.

I cannot recall a Friday blog that was this calm. To occupy yourself, why not take a look at our live coverage of Australia's renowned victory against England in 2003? It was written by Scott Murray, a notable sports writer.

My post about my favorite friendly events has been received positively, as I haven't received any emails regarding it yet. However, John Brewin has provided me with new information by emailing me the following message.

I want to tell you about an amazing game I attended! I got to go because I was working for Channel 5's website and they teamed up with France (the reigning World and Euro champions) to broadcast their matches. While I was there, I saw Zinedine Zidane play in person - he's still the greatest player I've ever watched live (even though I've seen Messi play 8-10 times). During the first half of the game, Zidane completely dominated Portugal, led by Luis Figo, with some impressive moves that I could only describe as almost seductive.

During the break, we went to a fancy lounge at Stade de France, where we watched TF1 replay Zizou's impressive first-half moves and tricks. He was an outstanding player even before joining forces with Figo in Madrid. The evening ended with a lavish dinner in Paris with Jonathan Pearce and Terry Butcher. Nothing has been as remarkable or extravagant as that night. In fact, my recent experience at Luton was the complete opposite.

It was in 1999 when Raul made a shushing gesture at the Camp Nou and Luis Figo turned against those who supported him.

In addition to the England versus Australia match, there are also the customary qualifiers for the European Championship happening tonight. We have provided a complete schedule of the matches below, all of which will start at 7:45 PM BST unless indicated otherwise.

Under Stephen Kenny's leadership, the Republic of Ireland has an opportunity to redeem themselves from their biggest letdown, but realistically, they're merely fighting for pride. The game is vital for the Netherlands and Greece as they compete for the second automatic qualification spot.

Tonight holds significant importance for Luxembourg, as they have a genuine chance of qualifying for a major tournament which they have never achieved before. The team has undergone improvement, adding to their optimism towards automatic qualification.

Match Review: Ireland vs Greece An exciting football match took place between the Republic of Ireland and Greece teams. The game was held at a neutral location, and both teams had strong lineups. The match was intense from the beginning. The Irish team started very strongly and dominated the opening exchanges, creating a few excellent chances to score. However, the Greek team responded well to the Irish onslaught and began to gain control of the game. The Greeks started to threaten the Irish goal and made a few good opportunities, but the Irish goalkeeper was alert and kept them at bay. With the game evenly poised, the Irish team scored a fantastic goal from a set-piece through a well-struck free-kick. The Greeks tried hard to draw level, creating some good chances, but could not find the back of the net. The Irish team then put the game beyond doubt, putting in a commanding performance and scoring a second goal to seal the victory. The second goal was another well-placed goal from a counter-attack. Overall, it was an entertaining game with some great football played by both teams. The Irish team deservedly won the match, but the Greek team fought valiantly and showed some good footballing skills.

The Estonia versus Azerbaijan football match is scheduled to kick off at 5pm.

In the football match between Liechtenstein and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the latter emerged as the winning team. The game was held in Liechtenstein and ended with a score of 1-0 in favor of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The match was quite intense with both teams giving it their all. However, Bosnia and Herzegovina managed to take the lead in the first half with a goal by striker Edin Dzeko. Liechtenstein tried hard to equalize but was unable to find the back of the net. Bosnia and Herzegovina maintained their lead till the end of the match and emerged as the winners. The team played well as a unit and showed their determination and skill. The win will surely boost their confidence in the remaining matches of the campaign. Liechtenstein, on the other hand, will have to work harder to improve their performance and try to secure some wins in the upcoming games. They have some talented players but need to put in more effort to compete with their opponents. Overall, it was an exciting match with both teams showing their strengths and weaknesses. Congratulations to Bosnia and Herzegovina for their victory.

Okay, since there's nothing interesting going on at the moment, I have a thought-provoking question for you: What's your favourite international friendly game and what makes it so special to you? As for me, it has to be the match on 25 April 1990. After finishing my day at Borden Grammar School, I met up with my brother and together we traveled to London by train. We were among the 21,340 ecstatic fans who witnessed Paul Gascoigne's outstanding performance that secured his place in England's Italia 90 team.

Today marks the 30th anniversary of Klaus Assenmacher's decision to give a red card to Ronald Koeman, which had a major impact on Graham Taylor losing his job as England manager. However, it's important to remember that the match itself was quite exciting for the first 70 minutes before the controversial event occured.

In case you missed it, Eduard Bello scored a fantastic last-minute goal to tie the game for Venezuela.

????????⚽️ Check out the awesome goal scored by Eduard Bello that helped La Vinotinto secure a draw against Brazil (1-1) at Arena Pantanal stadium in Cuiabá, during the third round of the South American Elimination for the 2026 World Cup. Watch the video and enjoy this amazing moment! #LaVinotinto #EduardBello #Brazil #Soccer #Goals #Sports #Entertainment.

If you're looking for some live sports coverage beyond just football, then Taha Hashim is the person to turn to.

Hi John and good morning to everyone. There doesn't seem to be any bad news in the world of football as the yellow ticker of misery isn't on Sky Sports News. As we wait for some updates, could you please lend me a hand and cast your vote on this website for any team that you believe performed the best during the 1980s for the England national team? It doesn't have to be my team, but I'd be grateful if you voted for them.

If you prefer, you also have the option to tune into the podcast at no cost.

Here's our team lineup. We only considered how well each player performed for England during that time period when making our selections. Because of this, we didn't include players like Gazza, David Platt, Ray Kennedy, or Trevor Cherry. Check out the picture to see who made the cut.

And so, I am passing the reins to Rob Smyth.

Manchester City's player Jack Grealish has not been a regular contributor to the team's success. However, is he capable of elevating his performance by exhibiting exceptional skills while playing for England? He took some time to talk at the England training facility this week.

I've never experienced a season like the last one before. During the second half of it, I was performing exceptionally well and playing in all the major matches. We concluded the season ideally. When the pre-season began, I felt a bit lost, not exactly wondering, "What now?" but you get the idea. Consequently, it was somewhat challenging.

John McGinn was quite upset in his response after Scotland lost in Spain due to Scott McTominay's disallowed goal.

The significant events didn't go in our favor. It's a difficult situation to accept, but we definitely put in a lot of effort for extended periods of time. Winning here is exceedingly challenging, especially given the circumstances, it was essentially unachievable.

I must be cautious about my words. From a Scottish perspective, it seemed like we were not receiving favorable judgments, regardless of whether you were playing, watching, or coaching. Even fair challenges appeared to result in losing possession of the ball. This made the match against a top-notch team rather challenging. On the subject of the disallowed goal, McGinn expressed his frustration by stating that the decision was overturned during the game.

This indicates that the situation wasn't easily understandable. I'm uncertain if the term "clear and obvious" is exclusive to VAR in Europe. Nonetheless, Jack chose to shift to the opposing side in that instance, and he could have remained where he was. Would Simon have been able to stop it? Definitely not. No goalkeeper on the planet could have prevented that.

He said it was a foul at first, but then he realized it wasn't and decided it was offside instead. This was a very critical moment that changed the outcome of the game because that goal helped us qualify because they needed to score two goals instead of just one. It was a tough situation for Scott, and I empathize with him. Unfortunately, things didn't go our way tonight and we weren't able to come out on top.

Don't forget the name: Jaden Philogene. He's currently playing for Hull, which has become known for producing talented players in recent times, after being released by Aston Villa.

The Women's World Cup was not successful for Team USA and they have yet to hire a coach. Journalist Jeff Kassouf delves deeper into the situation.

It's hard to predict who will take on the coaching role. We'll just have to wait and see when someone is chosen. The person responsible for making this crucial decision is the new sporting director of US Soccer.

Earlier this year, Matt Crocker became a part of US Soccer after leaving Southampton. Before that, he worked as the head of development squads at the English FA. There, he created the "England DNA" idea, which ensures that all teams playing under the badge follow a similar playing style. Now, he aims to apply this concept to US Soccer.

Take this week's quiz and see how you score! I managed to get 11 out of 15 questions correct and I'm feeling pretty good about it. There were a few that I didn't quite get though.

There are further developments expected on this matter, which could have significant consequences for Newcastle and Aston Villa. Additionally, it serves as a reminder of the uneasy connection between gambling and soccer.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has confirmed that two midfielders, Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo, were released from the national team's training centre, Coverciano Federal Training Centre, due to not being in the right state to face upcoming matches. Although the FIGC did not reveal the reason behind the investigation that was conducted by the Turin Public Prosecutor's Office on Thursday, the federation released a statement about the matter.

Argentina's Unbeaten Streak In World Cup Qualifiers

Lionel Messi unfortunately had some bad luck after coming off the bench during his return from injury. He hit the post twice, but was unable to provide a noteworthy performance.

In a match for the South American World Cup qualifying round, Argentina secured a 1-0 win over Paraguay. On the other hand, Brazil and Venezuela settled for a 1-1 draw, causing disappointment among the Brazilian fans. As a consequence, the new coach of Brazil, Fernando Diniz, faced criticism and more pressure. However, Argentina maintained their flawless record and became the only team leading the competition, having won all three of their matches.

Argentina is at the top of the South American World Cup qualifying table with 9 points, while Brazil stands at 7, and Colombia at 5. Uruguay, Chile, and Venezuela all hold 4 points each, whereas Ecuador has 3. Paraguay and Peru are currently holding one point each, while Bolivia is at the bottom with 0 points. On Tuesday, all ten teams will be playing the fourth round.

The sole objective of the game at the Monumental de Nunez Stadium was accomplished in just three minutes, courtesy of a corner kick that landed on Nicolás Otamendi who was unmarked in the penalty box. The defender blasted a left-foot volley and sent the ball sailing into the net.

Brazil couldn't beat Venezuela at home for the first time. Neymar, Vinicius Júnior, and Richarlison found it challenging to score a goal in the first half.

Immediately following Neymar's initial chance in the second half, he took a shot from outside the box and it was the Al-Hilal player's assist that resulted in Brazil scoring their only goal.

During the match at Arena Pantanal in Cuiabá, which is among Brazil's hottest locations this season, Neymar executed a corner kick that led to a header by Gabriel Magalhães from close range in the 52nd minute. Despite this setback, Venezuela continued to press and eventually scored an incredible half-bicycle goal by Eduardo Bello in the 85th minute, which is considered one of the most remarkable goals in South American World Cup qualifying to date.

On Thursday, there was a match between Colombia and Uruguay which ended in a 2-2 tie. James Rodríguez, who has been playing for a long time, scored the first point for the home team after 37 minutes of play. After a short while, Matias Oliveira evened the score before halftime.

In the 52nd minute, Mateus Uribe brought the Colombians back in the lead. Nonetheless, right before the match ended, Uruguay scored an equalizer. This happened when Darwin Núñez was fouled by goalkeeper Camilo Vargas, who was subsequently sent off by the referee.

In the recent football match, Ecuador emerged victorious over Bolivia in La Paz after a close match, with a score of 2-1. Kendry Paéz managed to score one goal for the visitors just before the half-time break. Later in the game, Rodrigo Ramallo put in an equalizer for Bolivia in the 83rd minute. However, Kevin Rodriguez of Ecuador scored a goal at the very end of the game that gave Ecuador their first three points in the qualifying round.

The Chilean team won against Peru with a score of 2-0. Diego Valdéz made the first goal during the 74th minute of the game, and Marcos López accidentally put the ball in his own goal during injury time, which concluded the scoring.

This week's major development – in the world of soccer at least – is Wayne Rooney's comeback to English soccer and his joining Birmingham City. However, he had the option to relocate from Washington to a completely different location.

Rooney expressed that he believed his progress would be better served by taking a different route, when discussing the attention he received from Saudi Arabia. He wanted to clarify that his decision was not a criticism of any manager who had previously accepted a job in Saudi Arabia.

Scotland Loses 2-0 To Spain, Fans React

Despite the VAR decision to disallow Scott McTominay's goal, Scotland's manager, Steve Clarke, remained quite calm and composed. Fortunately, Spain managed to secure a win against Norway which secured Scotland's qualification to the next round.

The team put in a commendable performance, but the players are feeling disheartened. Our goal was to secure a qualification spot, but unfortunately, we didn't achieve that tonight. Despite the setback, I believe there were many positives to take away from the game. The turning point was likely the debatable call on Scott McTominay's goal. At the moment, we were under the impression that it was a valid goal.

When the referee is instructed to review a situation, it is likely that he will disallow the goal. The decision has been made and there is no sense in dwelling on it. There was some uncertainty at the moment, as to whether it was an offside offense or a foul on the goalkeeper.

When you put those two things together, it appears that Jack Hendry was slightly offside. Additionally, he made a move towards the goalkeeper which led the officials to believe that he was part of the current play. However, it is important to note that regardless of Hendry's location, the goalkeeper would not have been able to stop the ball. It is frustrating when VAR rulings don't go in your favor but ultimately one must move on from that decision.

When the opposition scored against us, it made our task more challenging. The second goal that Spain scored may have made the win look better for them, but I am not convinced they really deserved it.

We had our initial opportunity to qualify today, but unfortunately we failed. However, there is still a chance that we may qualify if Sunday's outcome is in our favor. Although, our qualification will not solely depend on that one game, but on the entirety of our work thus far. We have managed to secure 15 points from six games.

If we don't win against Norway and the result doesn't go our favor, we still have a high probability of winning the section as we have two games lined up in November.

Andy Robertson will return to Liverpool to receive medical attention for a shoulder injury. He was substituted for Nathan Patterson just prior to the break.

Okay. UEFA has altered their decision once more and currently, the goal of McTominay has been invalidated for offside.

It would be more logical to say that Hendry was in communication with the goalkeeper during an offside attempt on goal.

It's not necessary to commit a foul, just blocking someone's path is enough. However, the consequences are still severe. The accompanying video shows an example of this.

Good morning all the way from London! It's time for our usual Friday blog post, and today we will be talking about the various international matches that are happening.
