Portugal's Euro 2024 Dream Over
On the evening of Friday, July 5th, 2024 at 10:55 PM.
Portugal's dreams of Euro 2024 have been dashed as they were defeated by France in a penalty shootout, with a final score of 5-3.
After a frustrating game in Hamburg that lasted 120 minutes, the tension of penalty kicks unfolded. Joao Felix failed to score with his shot, allowing Theo Hernandez to stay calm and score the winning goal.
Bruno Fernandes was not involved in the penalty shootout this time, even though he scored one in the last round against Slovenia. He was taken off the field before the penalties. Diogo Dalot, who scored for United in the Emirates FA Cup semi-final shootout against Coventry City, did not come off the bench in this match.
The stage is now set for the first semi-final match, where Spain will face off against France on Tuesday. The remaining quarter-final matches between England and Switzerland, as well as Turkey and the Netherlands, are scheduled to take place on Saturday.
France are overjoyed to have secured a spot in the semi-finals.
Fernandes started off strong, even though his corner kicks weren't as consistently on target as usual. He managed to take a shot that was deflected wide after 16 minutes of cautious play.
Our number 8 player, who was wearing his national team's jersey, had a special opportunity to take a free kick for Portugal. Cristiano Ronaldo allowed him to take the shot, but unfortunately, his attempt missed the goal and didn't require the goalkeeper to make a save.
A lot of his best work came from gaining control of the ball and contributing in every part of the field, especially when stealing the ball from Antoine Griezmann just as he was about to take a shot on goal.
Even though he usually played on the left side of midfield, he was constantly moving around the field as directed by coach Roberto Martinez.
Bruno had a great opportunity in the beginning of the game, but Maignan's strong right hand prevented him from scoring. After making a quick run into the box, Bruno passed the ball to Joao Cancelo, but his shot missed the target.
Unexpectedly, the match became more exciting with Vitinha making Maignan stop another shot before Randal Kolo Muani and Eduardo Camavinga missed great chances for the team. Ousmane Dembele, who came in as a substitute, almost scored but his shot went wide of the post. The game was still tied with no goals scored.
Fernandes was unexpectedly substituted in the 75th minute and Dalot was not seen coming on from the sidelines as the match went into extra time. Ronaldo missed his shot after being set up by Francisco Conceicao and Rafael Leao's shot was blocked, leading to the end of the first period. In the second half, Felix's header hit the side-netting and the last chance, from Nuno Mendes, was saved by Maignan.
In the penalty shootout, only one player missed their shot. Felix's attempt hit the goalpost, while Hernandez stepped up and sent France to the next round.
Earlier today, Spain beat Germany 2-1 in a match that went into extra time.
In the game, Dani Olmo scored first for Spain, but then Florian Wirtz equalized for the other team with an 89th-minute goal from Joshua Kimmich's great assist. The hosts seemed safe until the 119th minute when Mikel Merino scored the winning goal from Olmo's cross. Despite Dani Carvajal receiving a red card, Spain still managed to secure a fantastic victory.
The new home kit for United, designed by adidas, has been released for the 2024/25 season.
