The cabinet reshuffle that took place on Monday was mainly focused on the unexpected announcement that former Prime Minister David Cameron would be rejoining the government.

However, he wasn't the sole former minister rejoining the cabinet.

Esther McVey, who held the position of work and pensions secretary in 2018, has been appointed to another government role.

She has been granted the position of a minister without a specific responsibility in the Cabinet Office.

She has been given the nickname "minister for common sense" informally.

Esther McVey: Who Is She?

Born and raised in Liverpool in 1967, Ms McVey was placed in a Barnardo's foster home shortly after birth due to her young parents' financial difficulties.

For the initial two years of her existence, she stayed under the watchful eye of the charitable organization until she went back to her biological parents.

During her conversation with the Political Thinking with Nick Robinson podcast, she expressed that she didn't hold any negative feelings towards her family for the choice they made.

In my opinion, true love is shown when you acknowledge that you are unable to fully take care of someone, and you make the bold decision to entrust them to someone else.

She received her education from a school exclusive to only female students and worked her way up to become the head girl. When it came down to selecting between a career in ballet or pursuing law studies, she ultimately opted for the latter.

Although she worked as a waitress in a restaurant that catered to show business personalities in London, she eventually made the decision to pursue a career in television hosting.

Throughout her time in the media industry, she had involvement in various shows, such as a documentary centered on individuals who practice naturism that was broadcast on Channel 5, the religious program titled Heaven and Earth Show which aired on BBC One, and lastly, the morning show GMTV that was broadcasted on ITV.

During the first decade of the 2000s, she embarked on a political career and emerged victorious in 2010 by securing the Wirral West seat for the Conservative party in Merseyside.

Esther McVey and her husband Philip Davies, who is also a Conservative MP, co-host a program on GB News.

During David Cameron's tenure as the Prime Minister, she worked as a cabinet member in the work and pensions division. Her role in implementing policies aimed at reducing benefits triggered significant public backlash and scrutiny.

After losing her seat in the 2015 election, she made a comeback to the Parliament two years later, but this time as the MP representing Tatton constituency in Cheshire. Later on, Theresa May appointed her as the work and pensions secretary.

Ms McVey has openly expressed her desire to become the head of the UK government as she revealed on the television program, Loose Women. In 2019, she tried to secure the leadership position.

Following her removal from Boris Johnson's ministerial squad in 2020, she made her way back to her career in media and now works as a co-host for GB News with her spouse and fellow Conservative MP, Philip Davies.

At the beginning of the year, Ofcom declared that the program violated impartiality regulations when they conducted an interview with Chancellor Jeremy Hunt.

Esther McVey's Fresh Role?

After coming back to her government posts, it is predicted that Ms McVey will no longer continue her work on television.

On Monday, the announcement of her appointment came towards the end and it is believed to be a means of soothing Conservative MPs on the right-wing who are unhappy with the appointment of Lord Cameron and the dismissal of ex-Home Secretary Suella Braverman.

The exact nature of her responsibilities has not been clearly defined by the government. However, Downing Street has assured that more information will be provided in the upcoming days.

When pressed further, the head of the Conservative Party, Richard Holden, mentioned that they will be examining topics regarding the allowance of free expression in universities.

He stated that Ms McVey spoke honestly and directly, and being from the north of the country, she would be a valuable new member of the cabinet.

Andrea Leadsom and Damian Hinds will be re-entering the government following their previous stints as ministers, joining the ranks of other former ministers who have done the same.

Andrea received significant roles during the administrations of David Cameron, Theresa May, and Boris Johnson. She even tried applying for the leadership position of the Conservative Party in 2016.

She has been appointed as a junior health minister, and Mr Hinds, who used to hold the position of education secretary, has assumed a new role at the Home Office.
