England’s Euro 2024 squad: Rashford and Henderson out, Wharton and Jones in

England squad

Gareth Southgate is about to announce the players for England's training squad, and he will have to make some significant choices. Among those decisions will be leaving out Marcus Rashford and Jordan Henderson, who are the most noticeable players not included.

Unexpectedly, Adam Wharton and Curtis Jones were chosen instead of Henderson to play in midfield. Ivan Toney was added to the attack lineup, but Ben Chilwell didn't make the cut even though there were concerns about Luke Shaw's ability to play left-back due to fitness issues.

The team that will be unveiled on Tuesday afternoon is expected to have a new and youthful appearance. Unfortunately for Henderson, his substandard performance this season has resulted in him being left out. He has never missed a significant tournament since his Euro 2012 debut but his time spent in the Saudi Pro League after leaving Liverpool seemed to have negatively impacted his game. Even after joining Ajax in January, he has not been able to regain his previous form.

Rashford hasn't been performing as well as expected for Manchester United, thus he's lost his spot to players like Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, and Bukayo Saka who have been excelling in the wide attacking roles.

In the midfield, Southgate has decided to exclude several players who he has previously relied on, including Kalvin Phillips. Instead, he has chosen to give opportunities to Jones from Liverpool and Wharton from Crystal Palace, who has impressed since transferring from Blackburn during the winter transfer window. Neither player has previously represented their country. Additionally, a new face on the team, Jarell Quansah from Liverpool, who also has no experience playing on the national team, will be joining the squad.

The four goalkeepers are Dean Henderson, Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale, and James Trafford.

These are the names of the defenders: Jarrad Branthwaite, Lewis Dunk, Joe Gomez, Marc Guéhi, Ezri Konsa, Harry Maguire, Jarell Quansah, Luke Shaw, John Stones, Kieran Trippier, and Kyle Walker.

In the midfield position, we have a number of talented players including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Gallagher, Curtis Jones, Kobbie Mainoo, Declan Rice, and Adam Wharton.

Possible rephrased version: These are the football players listed as forwards for the English national team: Jude Bellingham, Jarrod Bowen, Eberechi Eze, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Anthony Gordon, Harry Kane, James Maddison, Cole Palmer, Bukayo Saka, Ivan Toney, and Ollie Watkins. They are expected to contribute their skills and efforts to help the team succeed in its upcoming matches.

Southgate has a big problem when it comes to his defence. His top pick for left-back, Shaw, hasn't played for Manchester United since February. Nevertheless, he still has the potential to demonstrate that he's in good condition. Southgate is only going to pick 26 players for the team, and he typically allows key players time to heal from injuries previously sustained during tournaments. Chilwell was hoping to fill-in for Shaw, but he won't be joining the squad. The Chelsea left-back has been struggling with fitness. Colwill, another versatile player from Chelsea, hasn't been chosen either, nor has Reece James, who is a right-back for Chelsea.

In the blog, it is mentioned that Southgate is worried about the central defense position due to Harry Maguire's potential injury. The squad includes Marc Guéhi from Palace, Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton, and Lewis Dunk from Brighton, but Eric Dier is not included.

Eberechi Eze, an attacking midfielder from Palace, has been selected for the team after performing well in the final games of the season. Despite not having scored for Brentford since 17 February, Toney has also made the cut. Jarrod Bowen, a winger from West Ham, is included along with James Maddison and Anthony Gordon from Newcastle. However, Raheem Sterling did not make the cut. The goalkeeper who was left out was Nick Pope.
