Report: Scotland 30-21 England - Scottish Rugby
After a long 128-year wait, Duhan van der Merwe scored three tries and co-captain Finn Russell made six flawless kicks to secure the victory.
England scored the first try of the match, beautifully executed by George Furbank. After a scrum, Ben Earl passed to Danny Care, who then passed to Elliot Daly, allowing Furbank to move through a gap and score his first try for England. George Ford successfully converted the try, taking the score to 0-7 just five minutes into the game.
Zander Fagerson had to leave the game temporarily and the opposing team seemed to believe they could win, as Ford scored a penalty when Elliot Millar Mills was penalized for collapsing a scrum.
The audience at home was shocked, but Scotland continued with their game plan calmly, and the entire crowd was excited when Duhan van der Merwe redeemed himself for holding onto the ball during the ruck by making an amazing play.
Sione Tuipulotu had a great run from the back of the scrimmage, causing a disruption in the English defense. This allowed Huw Jones to have free reign over the Scottish Gas Murrayfield field, covering about 30 meters.
Jones was quick-witted and managed to pass the ball to van der Merwe after being tackled. Van der Merwe then tricked the opposition by pretending to go one way and ended up scoring a try on the right-hand side of the field. This try was significant because it was his 24th try for Scotland which put him on par with two other legendary players, Ian Smith and Tony Stanger, as well as his teammate Darcy Graham, who is currently out injured.
Once again, van der Merwe, who is known for his impressive performance on the field, managed to deliver a moment of awe that left the audience stunned. As England attempted to make a move towards the sideline, Ford ended up delivering a poorly angled ball towards Furbank's head. However, Jones caught it and quickly passed it over to van der Merwe, who was positioned on his team's 10-metre line.
Starting from what appeared to be an unthreatening spot on the field (although it may be hard to believe with such a massive runner), the wing player moved quickly, leaving Tommy Freeman behind in just a few strides. With focused determination, he sprinted towards the goal line, scoring Scotland's 25th try. Russell then made an exceptional sideline kick, increasing their lead to 14-10 with 30 minutes left in the game.
Ethan Roots committed an unnecessary offside penalty, which was successfully scored by Russell, resulting in a score of 17-10 at 34 minutes. Soon after, Ford managed to stop the progress of the Scottish team calmly, bringing the score to 17-13 at 37 minutes.
At the mid-point of the game, Scotland are currently leading England by a score of 17 to 13.
During the early part of the second half, Scotland made a near attempt of crossing the ball, but Sam Underhill was able to skillfully turn the situation to earn a penalty. Nonetheless, England's fate hung in the balance, as van der Merwe magnificently scored yet another unbelievable third goal.
Cam Redpath had an amazing run in the middle, which led to Russell receiving the ball. He quickly assessed the situation and decided to kick it out wide. It was a beautiful kick that landed perfectly, allowing Duhan to catch it and score his 26th try in just 37 games. Russell then effortlessly made the conversion, bringing the score to 24-13 just 46 minutes into the game.
Once again, England found themselves trying to hold back their opponent's advances. Ford managed to get a penalty, which helped to reduce the gap to eight points [24-16, 50 minutes into the game]. However, the opposing team quickly responded by earning a penalty when Ben Earl was caught offside. Russell easily scored the penalty kick, bringing the score to 27-16 by the 57th minute.
Elliot Millar Mills returned to the game in place of Zander Fagerson and showed excellent skills, despite having less international experience. He won a penalty turnover that was converted by Russell, maintaining his flawless record from the tee. The score was then 30-16 and the time was 65 minutes.
With only a few minutes left on the clock and 14 points behind, England demonstrated their skill as Immanuel Feyi-Waboso received a quick pass from Ben Spencer and easily made it to the try zone. The crowd at Murrayfield held their breath as Fin Smith’s conversion hit the post, but still showed their admiration for the impressive play. The score was now 30-21, and there were 67 minutes played.
Although the scoreboard remained untouched, there was no shortage of action in the final ten minutes of the match. Jack Dempsey and Ewan Ashman put on an impressive display to stop England from winning a scrum. Andy Christie delivered a bone-crunching tackle on Furbank, and the game culminated in van der Merwe receiving a yellow card whilst being awarded the Player of the Match title. Scotland secured their fourth consecutive Calcutta Cup victory in this historic match between the world's oldest rivals, a feat that has not been achieved in recent memory.
