Emma Raducanu secured a convincing victory of 6-2 6-1 against Angelique Kerber, a former two-time titleholder, during the round of 32 in the Porsche Grand Prix held in Stuttgart.
Raducanu has just helped Great Britain to make it to the finals of the Billie Jean Cup and she carried on with her impressive performance on clay by easily defeating the favored player from the host country.
Raducanu and Kerber both participated in the Stuttgart tournament as wildcard players. Raducanu's ranking had decreased due to taking a break from playing tennis to undergo three surgeries.
In the meantime, Kerber, the ex-top player in the world, has just made a comeback after taking a break of 18 months for maternity reasons.
Raducanu had a fantastic beginning by taking the first game from Kerber and though the German player tried to fight back, the US Open winner of 2021 seized the opportunity and won the first set in just 41 minutes.
At the beginning of the second set, Kerber lost her serve once again. Despite managing to catch up, Raducanu increased her intensity and didn't let a brief pause for a wellness check affect her game, securing a decisive triumph.
Similarly, in Stuttgart, Coco Gauff, the current US Open title-holder, fought her way back from being 4-2 down in the final set to defeat Sachia Vickery, another American player ranked 134 in the world. The three-set match saw Gauff take the first set 6-3, lose the second set 4-6, and then emerge victorious in the final set with a score of 7-5.
Ons Jabeur from Tunisia broke her losing streak of five games by defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova with a score of 2-6 6-3 7-6 (1). She admitted to the media that she had considered withdrawing from the tournament many times because she couldn't bear to lose again.
Naomi Osaka's comeback to the clay courts was abruptly ended in the first round of the Rouen tournament as she lost to Martina Trevisan with a score of 6-4, 6-2.
Similar to Kerber, Osaka has recently come back to playing tennis after taking a leave of absence for her pregnancy, and was participating in the tournament as a wildcard entry.
The Oeiras Ladies Open in Portugal saw Harriet Dart from Britain, who was ranked fifth, lose to Matilde Jorge, a player from Portugal, with a score of 6-3 and 6-1.
