Emma Raducanu: Briton to miss Hong Kong Open due to injury and races to be fit for Billie Jean King Cup

Emma Raducanu

Emma Raducanu, the previous US Open champion, has pulled out of yet another tournament because of a foot injury. However, she is optimistic about being ready to compete in the Billie Jean King Cup in November.

Raducanu hasn't competed since she had to withdraw during her quarter-final match against Daria Kasatkina at the Korea Open last month. This was her first tournament after losing in the first round at the US Open in August.

The British player disclosed that she had injured the ligaments in her foot, which led to her being unable to compete in the WTA 1000 tournaments at the China Open in Beijing and the Dongfeng Voyah Wuhan Open later that month. She also decided to pull out of the Ningbo Open and will be absent from this week's Guangzhou Open.

Raducanu was aiming to make a comeback at the WTA 250 Hong Kong Tennis Open, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports from October 28 to November 3. However, she has decided to withdraw from the tournament after confirming that she is not in good enough shape to compete.

In a post on X, Raducanu expressed: "I regret to inform you that I won't be able to compete in Hong Kong next week. Although my foot is healing well, I need a bit more time to be ready for matches."

"I look forward to returning to this tournament someday! For now, I'm focusing on getting myself prepared for the Billie Jean King Cup."

Raducanu has been selected as part of Great Britain's five-member team for the Billie Jean King Cup. She will be joining Katie Boulter, Harriet Dart, Heather Watson, and Olivia Nicholls. The team, led by Anne Keothavong, is set to compete against Germany on November 15 in Spain.

Since her surprising victory at the US Open three years ago, Raducanu has faced a series of injuries. Throughout much of 2023, she has been focused on recovering from surgeries on her wrists and ankle.

Ranked 55th in the world, she had a successful summer, reaching her first semi-final of the year in Nottingham, securing a victory against Jessica Pegula in Eastbourne, and making it to the round of 16 at Wimbledon. However, she has only participated in three tournaments since her loss to Lulu Sun.

She reached the quarter-finals in Washington before opting out of the consecutive WTA 1000 events in Toronto and Cincinnati, which led to an unexpected defeat at the US Open against Sofia Kenin. Raducanu managed to win her first two matches at the Korea Open but had to withdraw after the first set against Kasatkina.
