Emma Raducanu: Briton suffers early exit at Mutua Madrid Open against world No 82 Maria Lourdes Carle
Emma Raducanu's performance on clay courts worsened at the Madrid Open on Wednesday when she lost in the first round to Maria Lourdes Carle, who is ranked 82nd in the world. Emma was defeated in straight-sets and was eliminated from the tournament.
Raducanu entered the competition with a positive attitude as she had emerged victorious in four out of her last five matches after putting on impressive displays at the Billie Jean King Cup representing Great Britain and at the Porsche Grand Prix held in Stuttgart.
The British player expressed that she was "fatigued" before her match in Madrid. Unfortunately, she lost in the first round to Carle with a score of 6-2 6-2 on Pista Arantxa Sanchez.

The 2021 US Open winner appeared confident of her chances against qualifier Carle, as she fiddled with the bandage wrapped around her left knee.
However, the player who is 21 years old had a difficult 2023 season due to injuries. She did not perform well on the clay, making many mistakes. She was only able to win 13 out of 26 first serve points and 2 out of 14 on her second serve.
Carle won her second-ever WTA 1000 main draw match after defeating Taylah Preston and Astra Sharma from Australia. She faced Raducanu and managed to break her serve six times which resulted in her first WTA main-draw match win since 2022. This was also her second win at a clay-court WTA event.
Fleming Baffled By Raducanu's Body Language; Felt Like She Held Back

"To be honest, I am slightly surprised. During the second set, it was difficult for me to comprehend Emma's body language," shared Colin Fleming, a former tennis player, in an interview on Sky Sports Tennis.
Although the score was 4-1, which is usually a difficult situation to recover from, the two players are highly skilled and capable of doing so. However, there were no signs from either player's body language that they believed in their ability to make a comeback or even had the desire to do so.
"Things were bound to happen eventually. It's quite peculiar. Although she previously expressed feeling worn out, when you step onto the tennis court, you have to give it your all."
"If you're not physically capable of participating, you are unable to participate."
"I believe that Emma did not give her full effort. It was difficult to observe her not participating in the competition. That is my honest opinion."
Keothavong: Raducanu A No-show
Anne Keothavong, captain of the British Billie Jean King Cup team, expressed her thoughts on the recent tennis match, stating that it was a challenging experience. According to her, the game cannot be analyzed in detail because Emma, the player who usually performs well, did not exhibit her usual skills today.
If a sports player is not prepared to compete, it is unlikely that they will have a chance to succeed.
She started the match slowly and was unable to recover or figure out what to do. We should acknowledge her opponent because she came into the match with enthusiasm and energy and seemed more determined to win.
We often discuss the importance of the mind, emotions and physicality. Without the mind and emotions fully engaged, the physical body won't have the ability to perform effectively.
"I found it quite disheartening to witness. Despite claiming to be fatigued, can one allow their own thoughts to exacerbate their state of weariness?"

Naomi Osaka, a former top-ranked tennis player in the world, secured her first victory on clay surface in a span of two years. She managed to beat Greet Minnen, who entered the tournament as a lucky loser, with a score of 6-4 6-1.
The athlete who has won four Grand Slam tournaments will be competing in the second round with Liudmila Samsonova for the second time of the year.
