Debbie Nelson, the mother of rapper Eminem, who had a tumultuous relationship with her son that was often reflected in his popular song lyrics, has passed away at the age of 69.
Dennis Dennehy, a spokesperson for Eminem, verified Nelson's passing to CBS News Detroit through an email. The cause of death was not disclosed, but Nelson had been fighting lung cancer.
Nelson's complicated relationship with her son, Marshall Mathers III, has been well-known ever since the Detroit rapper rose to fame.
In tracks like the 2002 hit "Cleaning Out My Closet," Eminem criticized his mother. He reflects on moments of seeing her take prescription medications in the kitchen and complains about someone always rummaging through her belongings, leaving her frustrated over missing items. He describes a childhood spent in public housing, where he felt like a victim of Münchausen's Syndrome, being made to believe he was unwell when he really wasn't.
In the lyrics of his Oscar-winning song "Lose Yourself," featured in the film "8 Mile," he expresses emotions that have built up over time, mentioning "mom's spaghetti." This track later earned the award for best rap song at the 2004 Grammy Awards.
Nelson filed two defamation lawsuits against Eminem due to his remarks about her in various magazines and radio shows. In her 2008 book titled "My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem," she sought to clarify things by sharing insights into the rapper's childhood.
Earlier this month, Eminem took home the award for Best Hip Hop Act at the 2024 MTV EMAs, and he was also honored with an induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.
Last month, he shared the exciting news that he will soon become a grandfather. He revealed that his daughter, Hailie Jade, is expecting a baby through a heartfelt music video that celebrates their bond.
