Elton John reveals he is unable to watch his own musical after losing eyesight
At a recent gala for his new musical, The Devil Wears Prada, for which he composed the music, Elton John shared that he is unable to watch the production due to persistent issues with his vision.
While addressing the audience, the 77-year-old singer expressed gratitude to his partner, David Furnish, calling him "my support" throughout the years.
"I haven't been able to attend many of the previews lately since, as you know, I've lost my vision. It makes it challenging for me to actually see what's happening. However, I really enjoy listening, and I have to say, it sounded fantastic tonight," he continued.
In September, John shared that a serious eye infection he got in July during his time in France has caused him to lose sight in his right eye and has left him with just partial vision in his left eye.
"I'm on the road to recovery, but it's a very gradual journey, and it will be a while before I get my vision back in the affected eye," he shared in a post on social media. "I can't thank my amazing team of doctors and nurses, as well as my family, enough for the incredible care they've provided me during these past few weeks."
Last week, John shared with Good Morning America that issues with his vision were pushing back the release of his upcoming album with his longtime partner Bernie Taupin.
"I sadly lost vision in my right eye this past July due to an infection while I was in the south of France. It’s been four months since then, and my left eye isn’t in great shape either," he explained. "I hold onto the hope that things will improve, but right now I feel a bit trapped. I can manage something like this interview, but when it comes to going into the studio to record, I’m unsure how that would work since I can't read the lyrics."
The Devil Wears Prada has officially launched at the Dominion Theatre in London’s West End. The inaugural Sunday night show served as a fundraiser for the Elton John Aids Foundation.
"The Devil Wears Prada" started out as a book by Lauren Weisberger before being turned into a movie. It follows the journey of Andy, a hopeful journalist who takes on the challenging role of assistant to the famously tough editor of a fashion magazine, Miranda Priestly. In the musical adaptation, the role of Priestly is portrayed by American model and actress Vanessa Williams.
The glamorous event drew numerous well-known figures from the fashion industry, including Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue. There have been longstanding rumors that she partly inspired the character of Priestly.
During an interview with the BBC on the red carpet, Wintour remarked, "It's up to the audience and my colleagues to determine if there are any parallels between me and Miranda Priestly."
