Edoardo Bove, a midfielder for Fiorentina, is currently in a medically induced coma following a collapse on the pitch during his team's Serie A match against Inter Milan at home on Sunday. The match was called off shortly after the incident.
Bove's teammates quickly summoned medical assistance, and both teams gathered around the 22-year-old as he received care. He was promptly placed on a stretcher and taken to an ambulance located close to the field before being transported to Careggi Hospital in Florence.
Fiorentina and Careggi University Hospital have shared an update regarding footballer Edoardo Bove, stating that he is currently receiving medication for sedation and is in intensive care. According to their statement, initial tests related to his heart and nervous system have shown no signs of severe damage. Edoardo Bove will be reassessed in the next day.
Sky Italia has stated that the player woke up while being transported in the ambulance and was able to breathe independently.
Bove's family and girlfriend have come to the hospital, joined by Fiorentina's coach Raffaele Palladino, many of his teammates, club officials, and the mayor of the city.
Supporters of Fiorentina have come together outside the hospital.
The event occurred in the 16th minute of the game when the action came to a halt for a VAR review. Bove seemed to be crouching to tie his shoelaces when he unexpectedly collapsed to the ground.
The Fiorentina players were heartbroken on the pitch, receiving support from both their own staff and Inter players. Many were seen crying as both teams left the field.
The Italian league game was quickly stopped and then called off. At the moment Bove fell, the score was 0-0.
Inter's chairman, Giuseppe Marotta, expressed that delaying the match was a straightforward choice.
"Football is all about community, so it makes sense that when such situations arise, both the players and the referee come together to support one another. It was a quick, unplanned choice to stop the match," he shared with Sky Sport Italia.
Fellow Serie A teams rallied behind Bove, expressing their support.
"Everyone is supporting you, Edoardo!" Juventus shared on X, while league leaders Napoli added, "Keep going, Edoardo, we’re here for you!"
This marks the second time this year that a player has collapsed during a Serie A game. The first occurrence involved Roma player Evan Ndicka, who fell during his team’s match against Udinese in April.
