Fiorentina player Edoardo Bove in intensive care after collapsing on pitch
Edoardo Bove, a midfielder for Fiorentina, is currently in intensive care after he collapsed while playing during the Serie A game against Internazionale on Sunday.
In a formal announcement, the club stated: “ACF Fiorentina and Careggi University Hospital have revealed that football player Edoardo Bove, who collapsed during the Fiorentina vs. Inter game and received medical attention on the field, is now sedated and receiving treatment in the intensive care unit.”
The announcement stated, “The viola player reached the emergency room in stable condition, and preliminary cardiac and neurological examinations have confirmed that there is no immediate harm to the central nervous system or the respiratory system. Bove will undergo further assessment within the next 24 hours.”
Sky Sport Italia previously reported that Bove was able to breathe independently and had regained awareness while being taken to the nearby Careggi hospital. The 22-year-old collapsed after appearing to bend down to remove his boot during a pause in the game for a VAR review of a disallowed goal.
Medical staff quickly ran onto the field as Fiorentina players gathered around Bove, who joined the team on loan from Roma in August. Once Bove was transported by ambulance, the referee instructed the players to exit the field and head to the locker room, resulting in the game being temporarily halted.
Inter's chairman, Giuseppe Marotta, explained that deciding to delay the match was a straightforward choice. He said, "Football is a community, and when events like this occur, everyone involved—the players and the referee—came together to support one another. It was a collective and immediate decision to stop the game," during an interview with Sky Sport Italia.
The president of Fiorentina, Rocco Commisso, is “in regular communication with Florence from the U.S. to offer support to Edoardo and his family,” as stated by the club. Commisso expressed his encouragement by saying, “Stay strong, Edoardo; we’re here for you. You’re a resilient young man with a strong spirit. We’re connecting with the family during this challenging time.”
A representative from Serie A has announced that the match will be rescheduled for a future date. Roma, scheduled to face Atalanta on Monday night, expressed their support on X, stating: “We stand united, we're all behind you. Forza Edo!”
