Fiorentina's midfielder Edoardo Bove fainted on the field during his team's Serie A game against Inter Milan on Sunday.
Bove's teammates quickly summoned medical assistance and gathered around the 22-year-old while paramedics attended to him. After providing care, they promptly placed him on a stretcher and transported him to a nearby ambulance on the edge of the field.
The event took place in the 16th minute, leading to a temporary halt in the game while the score remained 0-0. Eventually, the match was called off, but there are intentions to rearrange it for later in the season.
Sky Sport Italia has stated that Bove was transported to Careggi Hospital, which is located close to the Stadio Artemio Franchi, the home ground of Fiorentina.
The Italian broadcaster later reported that Bove is now breathing independently and that his heart is functioning on its own.
In the moments after Bove fell, both his teammates and rivals were clearly distressed and overwhelmed, with some even in tears.
In April, Roma's defender Evan Ndicka fell to the ground, clutching his chest. This incident recalls the tragic event from twelve years ago when Piermario Morosini passed away after experiencing cardiac arrest during a Serie B game.
Inter and Fiorentina are both positioned close to the top of the Serie A standings, just trailing behind the frontrunners, Napoli.
Bove has been a standout player for Fiorentina since he joined the team on loan from Roma last summer. He netted his first goal for the club in October during a 5-1 win against his parent team.
In the summer, Fiorentina spent €1.5 million to secure Bove on loan and has the choice to sign him permanently for another €10.5 million.
