Ed Sheeran has issued an apology to Ruben Amorim for interrupting a Sky Sports interview featuring the new manager of Manchester United.
Amorim chatted with host Kelly Cates and analysts Roy Keane, Izzy Christiansen, and Jamie Redknapp following Manchester United's 1-1 tie with Ipswich.
Sheeran is a supporter of Ipswich and owns a small share in the club. He observed from the stands as his team secured a commendable draw.
After Amorim finished responding to questions following the game, Sheeran leaped onto the scene and embraced his friend Redknapp in an unusual interruption.
Amorim seemed unfazed, while Redknapp encouraged Sheeran to come over and greet him shortly.
On Monday, Sheeran shared on social media: “I'm sorry if I upset Amorim yesterday; I didn't know he was in the middle of an interview. I was just stopping by to say hello and goodbye to Jamie. I feel a bit foolish about it, but that's how it goes. It was a fantastic game, though—congratulations to everyone who took part! x.”
Sheeran faced backlash online, as television audiences referred to the interaction as "uncomfortable" and "disrespectful."
Manchester United supporter and podcast host Jay Motty shared on Twitter: “I can’t believe this self-absorbed fool, who clearly has no understanding of football, decided to interrupt a Ruben Amorim interview just to talk to Ed Sheeran.”
Another user tweeted, "This is a complete lack of professionalism from these clowns at Sky Sports. They need to show some respect. Ruben should have just left."
One commenter stated, "Ed Sheeran and Sky Sports are a joke. I really hope Amorim avoids doing interviews with them in the future."
