At the start of this month, news came out that Sir Bob has created a "blended" edition of the popular single. This new version combines vocals from three earlier versions of the song to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original Band Aid.

One of the artists featured in what some are calling the "ultimate mix" is Ed, who was a member of Band Aid 30 back in 2014.

Not long after the news was released, the singer from Lego House stated that he was not consulted about having his voice included in the song. He mentioned that he would have "politely said no" if he had been approached for permission.

"Ten years later, my perspective on this story has evolved," he stated, noting: "This is merely my individual viewpoint, and I hope it reflects a positive outlook for the future."

Ed also shared a statement from Fuse ODG, a Ghanaian-British artist, where he said, “A decade ago, I chose not to take part in Band Aid because I understood the negative impacts such projects have on Africa.”

Although they can evoke compassion and encourage financial support, these narratives reinforce harmful stereotypes that hinder Africa's economic development, tourism, and investment. This, in turn, leads to massive financial losses for the continent and undermines its sense of dignity, pride, and cultural identity.

By presenting images that strip away humanity, these efforts tend to invoke sympathy instead of fostering collaboration, which inhibits genuine involvement. My goal has been to take back the narrative, giving Africans the power to share their own stories, reshape their identity, and highlight Africa as a vibrant center for investment and tourism.

In a recent interview with The Times, Sir Bob addressed the criticism aimed at Band Aid, emphasizing, "This simple pop song has saved the lives of millions. What reason would Band Aid have to stop providing meals for thousands of children who rely on us?"

As reported by The Times, the lead singer of the Boomtown Rats listed all the efforts the charity is involved in, covering areas like education and healthcare. He then questioned, "Why stop supporting this work just because of a vague debate from wealthier countries, no matter how valid it might be?"

"Regardless of how genuinely we believe in certain theories, they mustn't overshadow or divert our attention from the disturbing and tangible reality we face. Currently, there are 600 million people suffering from hunger globally, with 300 million of them in Africa. While we wish the situation were different, it simply isn't. We can make a difference for some of those in need, and that’s our commitment moving forward."

The 2014 release of Do They Know It’s Christmas? featured a number of changed lyrics from the original track that sparked some controversy.

Bono’s well-known line, “tonight thank God it’s them instead of you,” was changed to “tonight we’re reaching out and touching you.” Similarly, the phrase “where the only water flowing is the bitter sting of tears” was altered to “where a kiss of love can kill you and there’s death in every tear,” reflecting the impact of the Ebola crisis.

The phrase “There won’t be snow in Africa this Christmas” was swapped out for “bring peace and joy this Christmas to West Africa.” Likewise, “a song of hope where there’s no hope tonight” took the place of “the greatest gift they’ll get this year is life.”

A recent press release for the “Ultimate Mix” excitedly announced: “In the Band Aid - 2024 Ultimate Mix, you’ll get to hear a younger version of Sting performing with a younger Ed Sheeran. You’ll also find a young Boy George teaming up with a young Sam Smith, as well as a young George Michael alongside a young Harry Styles.”

"Younger Bono alongside an older version of himself, Chris Martin paired with Guy Garvey, the Sugababes teaming up with Bananarama, Seal alongside Sinead O'Connor, Rita Ora collaborating with Robbie Williams, and Kool and the Gang joining forces with Underworld."

The premiere of "Do They Know It’s Christmas? 2024 Ultimate Mix" will take place on breakfast radio on Wednesday, November 27, and will be available for purchase right after that.
