Who is Sheikha Mahra? Why did Dubai Princess announce divorce on Instagram? From fairytale romance to heartbreaking separation

Dubai Princess Sheikha Mahra

Royal Turmoil: Sheikha Mahra Announces Divorce On Instagram

Going against the strict rules of the royal family, Sheikha Mahra, the daughter of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, made her divorce public on Instagram. She declared the end of her marriage by using the Islamic vow of divorce, typically said by men. She finished her post by referring to herself as "your ex-wife," even though she had called her husband "dear," according to MSN reports.

Impact Of 'Triple Talaq' On Culture And Law

The triple talaq, which is a verbal form of divorce, is not commonly utilized by women. According to legal expert Hesham El Rafei from the United Arab Emirates, Muslim wives who want a divorce must submit a complaint and participate in mediation sessions. If these attempts are unsuccessful, the case is brought before a judge who requires proof of fault. This process can last for up to a year, unlike the quick and easy, no-fault divorces available to expatriates in Abu Dhabi.

The couple, who got married in April of last year, recently welcomed the arrival of their first child. However, Sheikha Mahra hinted at a possible separation when she posted a picture of herself and her daughter online three weeks after the birth, captioned, "just the two of us." While Emirati royals and families are not allowed to make public statements about their personal lives, this post sparked speculation that her social media account may have been compromised.

Abdulkhaleq Abdulla, who comments on politics, said that the Instagram post by Sheikha Mahra went against the traditional customs of the private Emirati culture and the behavior expected from members of the royal family. Since Sheikha Mahra's mother is considered to be more open-minded and is not Emirati, her actions were somewhat more tolerated.

Sheikha Mahra Breaks Taboos

According to MSN, Sheikha Mahra broke tradition seven months ago by appearing on the cover of Harper's Bazaar Arabia, despite the typical taboo against conservative Emirati women being depicted in public, especially without headscarves. Her husband, Sheikh Mana bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, does not share any photos of his wife or child on his Instagram account.

What was shared by Sheikha Mahra on her Instagram account? Sheikha Mahra, the daughter of Dubai's ruler, went against formal royal customs by publicly revealing her divorce on Instagram, swearing the traditional Islamic divorce vow typically reserved for men.

What made people wonder about Sheikha Mahra's Instagram post? Because members of the Emirati royal family are not allowed to talk about their personal lives in public, Sheikha Mahra's post on Instagram, which suggested a split shortly after she had a baby, led to rumors that her account may have been hacked.
