The name "Download Festival" carries a dual significance. At the time it was introduced, the term 'Download' was somewhat controversial due to associations with illegal downloading on platforms like Napster. Additionally, the festival was viewed as a modern-day continuation of the Monsters of Rock, with the internet serving as a way to connect with attendees. Each ticket included a download code, allowing fans to access songs from the bands slated to perform.
