Monaco condemn racist abuse of defender Wilfried Singo after Gianluigi Donnarumma injury
Monaco has denounced the "unacceptable" racist abuse aimed at Wilfried Singo following the defender's collision that injured Paris St-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma during their Ligue 1 game on Wednesday.
The goalkeeper needed 10 staples to stitch up a cut on his face after being struck by Singo's boot. This happened when the defender tried to leap over the approaching Italian player as he was racing toward the goal during Monaco's 4-2 loss at home to PSG.
Singo, who received a yellow card earlier in the match, did not face any consequences for the incident that required the goalkeeper to leave the field.
Singo expressed his regret to Donnarumma, stating, "I didn’t mean to do it, but I realized later that he had a serious injury to his face."
The 23-year-old player from Ivory Coast, who transferred to Monaco from Italian team Torino in 2023, faced racial harassment on social media following the match.
Monaco stated that the club "strongly disapproves of the intolerable racist remarks" and emphasized that "this kind of conduct has no place in sports, both during the game and outside of it."
The Ligue 1 team stated that they will provide their complete backing to the defender.
After the game, Singo and Donnarumma had a conversation, and the Italian player was able to return to Paris alongside his teammates.
PSG announced that Donnarumma is scheduled for "medical checks" on Thursday and will need to take a break for a few days.
