Diwali Padwa: Celebrating King Bali's Triumph

Diwali Padwa, also known as Bali Puja or Bali Pratipada, is observed on the first day of Kartik Pratipada, right after Diwali Puja. This celebration happens at the same time as Govardhan Puja; however, while Govardhan Puja pays homage to the Govardhan Hill and Lord Krishna, Bali Puja is dedicated to asking for the blessings of the demon king Bali. In India, Bali is revered during Diwali due to a special blessing from Lord Vishnu, symbolizing the victory of good over evil, which makes this day very meaningful for devotees. History Of Bali Pratipada 2024

Legends surrounding the Vamana Avatar of Lord Vishnu tell us that the demon king Bali was sent to Patala, or the underworld, by Lord Vishnu. However, because of Bali's kindness, Vishnu allowed him to return to the earthly realm, Bhulok, for a period of three days. During this time, it is said that King Bali bestowed blessings upon his followers.

Religious scriptures indicate that a depiction of King Bali and his wife Vindhyavali should be centered in the home. This depiction should be decorated with five distinct colors, and followers are encouraged to honor this vibrant image during the celebration of Bali Puja.

Rituals For Bali Pratipada 2024

The traditions of Bali Pratipada differ from one region to another, but they typically involve giving gifts to pay tribute to King Bali and various deities. Hindus kick off the day with a ritualistic oil bath and then dress in new garments. Many decorate their homes with vibrant Rangoli or Kolam patterns at the front door, and they offer prayers to representations of Bali and his consort, Vindhyavali, which are often crafted from clay or cow dung.

As evening arrives, lights are turned on at entrances and in places of worship. Festivities involve community games, hearty meals, and the classic dice game pachikalu, which is linked to a myth involving the deities Shiva, Parvati, Kartikeya, and Ganesha.

In western India, cultural celebrations and music performances are integral to the festivities. Farming communities in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka also partake in unique ceremonies like Kedaragauri Vratam, Gopuja, and Gouramma Puja, which involve cleaning cow shelters and honoring ornate representations of King Bali.
