Dillian Whyte made a successful comeback on Sunday, securing a victory over Ebenezer Tetteh with a technical knockout in the seventh round.
The referee stopped the fight before Round 8, putting an end to a lackluster match in Gibraltar.
This was Whyte's second match in two years, following a failed drug test that occurred before his planned rematch with Anthony Joshua in August 2023. He was eventually permitted to return to boxing after it was determined that he had consumed a tainted supplement.
Whyte (31-3, 21 KOs) was anticipated to have an easy time against the seasoned 36-year-old Tetteh (23-2, 20 KOs) from Ghana, but he struggled more than expected and couldn't manage to score a knockdown against his opponent.
In the early rounds, Whyte, who is 36 years old, was more active in the ring. However, Tetteh effectively handled the punches and continued to press forward. By the end of Round 3, it was clear that Whyte was starting to tire, having exerted a lot of energy with strikes that didn't seem to affect Tetteh at all.
In Round 4, Tetteh seemed more active but struggled to land many of his punches as the match devolved into a brawl, with both fighters missing plenty of significant hits. While Whyte appeared more effective when he utilized his jab, he was still not performing at his best against the determined Tetteh.
The British boxer seemed to catch Tetteh off guard in Round 6 with a solid flurry of punches, but his progress was interrupted when he slipped and fell to the mat. Although Tetteh was determined and kept trying, he wasn't able to make a significant impact. Ultimately, the referee decided to stop the fight after Round 7.
Whyte emphasized that he was pleased to have gone the distance in the match and expressed his admiration for Tetteh following the bout.
"People from developing nations are constantly striving to improve their lives and the lives of their families," Whyte shared with DAZN. "I have a background like his. I landed quite a few punches on his head and chin, and he's really resilient."
"I'm also really pleased because he provided me with the opportunities I was looking for. Over the past two years, I've had around 10 rounds, so I’m quite satisfied."
"I'm eager to stay active and keep myself engaged. I'm open to taking on any challenger and I'm ready to take risks for what I want. I’m looking forward to another fight in March. My main goal is to keep fighting and stay busy."
