Celebrating Didi Kempot: The Life and Legacy of Indonesian Singer
Didi Kempot, also known as Dionisius Prasetyo, was celebrated by Google Doodle for his enduring legacy on February 26.
The late musician, who was praised as the “Godfather of Broken Hearts,” was born in Surakarta, Indonesia to a family of entertainers.
His mother was a traditional Javanese singer and his brothers were comedians.
At 18, Kempot formed his own band and started performing folk-pop songs on the streets.
Later on, in 1989, his songs gained global attention when he was signed to a music label.
Kempot had a big following in countries with a significant Javanese population, such as the Netherlands and Suriname, due to his hit single Cidro.
On February 26, 2017, he achieved a major accomplishment when he was presented with a Billboard Indonesia Lifetime Achievement Award.
This milestone was celebrated on the day of the Doodle tribute.
In the months leading up to his death, Kempot started a fundraising campaign to support Indonesia’s fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
He was able to raise over $400,000 which was presented to the Indonesian president at a virtual concert.
Sadly, on May 5, 2020, Didi Kempot passed away after suffering cardiac arrest at the age of 53.
His music and philanthropic acts will always be remembered and celebrated.
