Italy win first Davis Cup title for 47 years
Italy has made it to the final round on four occasions since their previous triumph in 1976.
Jannik Sinner was in control during his match against Alex de Minaur from Australia, which ultimately led to Italy winning the Davis Cup for the first time in 47 years.
In the opening singles match in Malaga, Spain, Matteo Arnaldi defeated Alexei Popyrin with a score of 7-5 in the first set, followed by Popyrin winning the second set 2-6. However, Arnaldi emerged as the victor with a final set score of 6-4, leading Italy to a 1-0 advantage. The match was tense and nerve-wracking for both players.
Sinner continued his impressive performance from the previous week, defeating De Minaur with a score of 6-3 in the first set and 6-0 in the second set.
For all of us, it's an amazing sensation, and we're all very pleased, according to Sinner.
Italy has won the Davis Cup for the second time, as they had previously won the championship in 1976.
The Italy team rushed onto the court with great joy to celebrate with Sinner, who triumphantly raised his arms in the air as De Minaur's backhand missed the mark and secured their win.
Australia aimed to win their 29th Davis Cup title, however, they have encountered consecutive losses in the finals, after getting defeated by Canada in the previous year.
Sinner Achieves 'historic' Win With Class
There was a sense of anticipation surrounding Italy's appearance in the final eight, mostly due to Sinner's exceptional performance.
The young player who is 22 years old has only been defeated in three of his 23 recent matches. He has also won championships in Montpellier, Toronto, Beijing, and Vienna. In addition, he managed to defeat Novak Djokovic, who is ranked as the world's number one player, during the round-robin stages of the ATP Finals.
Sinner, ranked fourth in the world, played a crucial role for Italy in the tie against Serbia. He saved three match points against Djokovic to help Italy level the tie and later joined forces with Lorenzo Sonego to clinch victory in the doubles match and secure Italy's spot in the final.
"We stayed united throughout. Just yesterday, we were on the brink of elimination, but today we can bask in the glory of our victory. It's safe to say that we are all thrilled with the outcome," expressed Sinner.
We want to express our immense gratitude to Matteo Berrettini as well. He's been through a great deal of hardship this year, struggling with multiple injuries, and it truly means the world to us that he arrived at our destination with such enthusiasm and positivity.
At the beginning of the game against De Minaur, Sinner made it clear what he wanted. He managed to break in the third game and then won the second set point after De Minaur overhit a lob.
De Minaur had no chance of making a comeback because of his poor serve and Sinner was boosted by the loud cheering from the crowd, leading to a dominant second set display.
Sinner played an unstoppable match, where he only let his opponent have one opportunity to break his serve, and he managed to convert five of his own 10 chances to score points.
Arnaldi made a fantastic beginning for Italy in the first singles match against Popyrin, which was quite intense.
During the first set of a challenging match, the players took turns breaking each other's serve. Popyrin, who is currently ranked 40th in the world, managed to save set points, but missed several opportunities to score for himself. As a result, he handed the first set to the Italian opponent when he failed to return the ball successfully and hit it into the net.
The person from Australia found their groove in the second set, quickly gaining a lead by breaking their opponent's serve twice before successfully serving out the set and taking the match to a final set.
However, the anxiety that had seemingly disappeared during the second set resurfaced during the third. Popyrin had missed eight opportunities to break, giving Arnaldi a chance to strike when he least expected it. Arnaldi ultimately capitalized on the situation and secured the victory with his first match point.
"I have emerged victorious from one of the most vital matches of my life. I am at a loss for words," uttered an emotionally charged Arnaldi, addressing the audience on the court post his triumph.
The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, shared a message on X expressing her admiration towards the players and staff for their outstanding talent, dedication, and hard work that led to an extraordinary outcome. She described the outcome as an extraordinary achievement to be remembered for years to come.
BBC tennis expert, Russell Fuller, is currently in Malaga.
Sinner's outstanding triumph against De Minaur was nothing short of remarkable, despite having previously beaten him in all six previous face-offs. His head-to-head record spoke volumes in favor of Sinner, but the young Italian's performance was truly awe-inspiring.
Sinner's impressive performance in the past week included five consecutive wins, with one of them being especially notable. In the Saturday semi-final, he was down three match points against Djokovic but managed to come back and secure the victory, showcasing his exceptional skill during this later part of the season.
As a young buck of 23 years old, Djokovic secured a victory at the Davis Cup alongside Serbia and continued to dominate his field. Could we very well speak in the same regard of Sinner in due time?
The star of the day, in several aspects, was a different 22-year-old tennis player - ranked 44th in the world, Arnaldi. He successfully defended multiple break opportunities from his opponent, Popyrin, and eventually secured the win.
Throughout the entire week, the vibe and energy of the event were absolutely fantastic. Although there will likely be further discussion regarding the preferred structure for the competition, it is indisputable that Malaga and the International Tennis Federation delivered an outstanding event.
