Italy Into Davis Cup Final After Sinner’s Stunning Comeback Sees Off Djokovic
The Davis Cup is known for being a defining moment in a player's journey. It brings out certain skills that can only be found when one is carrying the weight of their team's expectations, in addition to their own. During a game at Málaga's Palacio de Deportes, with a loud crowd cheering wildly and chanting his name, Jannik Sinner seemed to have made a significant progress by leading Italy to a 2-1 victory over Serbia. This win led the team to a Davis Cup final, a place they haven't been to since 1998.
Sinner faced the world's number one player for the third time in 11 days. He was losing 4-5 and faced triple match point in the last set. It seemed impossible, but he managed to turn the game around and beat Djokovic with a score of 6-2, 2-6, 7-5. He also played a crucial role in the doubles match with Sonego, where they defeated Djokovic and Kecmanovic 6-3, 6-4 to win the tie.
Italy will be facing Australia in the upcoming final match on Sunday, as the latter managed to win against Finland 2-0 in yesterday's game. Australia was the runner-up in the previous year's tournament and is now set to try and take home the championship title this time.
"I am extremely delighted for everyone, including the team. We have a fantastic opportunity tomorrow," expressed Sinner. "Although we are aware of this, we will attempt to maintain a calm demeanor. It's important to keep a cheerful mindset and be happy to be here, right? Not everyone gets to experience a Davis Cup final, so it's significant for us, especially for me as a first-timer."
The tie started on Saturday afternoon and Kecmanovic put on another great performance to secure the first point for Serbia. He won impressively with a score of 6-7 (7), 6-2, 6-1 against Lorenzo Musetti. However, the tie eventually became chaotic.
The top-ranked tennis player in the world and the second-best player of recent times faced off once more. Sinner and Djokovic went head to head during the ATP Finals group stage for a gruelling three hours. This led to Sinner achieving his first win over the 24-time Grand Slam champion. However, Djokovic emerged victorious in the final showdown, comprehensively outplaying Sinner.
On this occasion, Sinner started the match with a lot of energy, hitting the ball very hard with both his forehand and backhand. He was eager to move quickly inside the court and dominate the area near the baseline. The 22-year-old player kept pressuring Djokovic with his fast and strong shots, pushing him back from the front of the court, and won the set very easily.
Djokovic seemed tired at first, but in the second set, he found the energy he needed. He served really well and his defensive strategy caused the Italian player to make mistakes. Djokovic, who is 36 years old, ended the set in a good position, using his forehand to hit the ball strongly and make the third and final set necessary.
In the last round, the game had reached a very high level, where both players were playing aggressively without any fear and serving very well. However, it was clear that only one player was going to win. Djokovic constantly kept pushing Sinner's service games whilst achieving an easy win on his own. Djokovic's dominance over the game was evident with his 0-40 lead on Sinner's serve, which was only a result of his outstanding performance.
Despite facing triple match point disadvantage, Sinner exhibited his mental and physical strength by delivering an exceptional service and taking an aggressive stance on the court. He seized five consecutive points and retained his position, while the spectators cheered him on. Meanwhile, Djokovic crumbled under the tension and concluded a subpar service game with a futile serve and volley. Sinner maintained his unflappable demeanor and secured an incredible triumph, marking his most memorable match to date.
After half an hour, Sinner and Djokovic were preparing for the crucial doubles match. It is evident that Djokovic is not as proficient in doubles as he is in singles. Sinner and Sonego, armed with powerful serves, tactics and a strong net presence, maintained their composure during two nail-biting sets, ultimately winning the match in impressive fashion.
Later on, Djokovic showered Sinner with compliments and expressed his congratulations. However, he couldn't conceal his dismay, saying, "Personally, it's a massive letdown because I feel accountable. I was so close to winning with three match points, and it's really unfortunate. This is just how sports goes. Losing for your nation magnifies the agony even more," he added.
Sinner had a successful afternoon as he won two matches against Djokovic. He achieved a unique feat by becoming the first player to defeat Djokovic twice in one day. Furthermore, he was the first to come back from being down triple match points against Djokovic. Additionally, Sinner put an end to Djokovic's consistent winning streak of 21 matches in the Davis Cup, which had been ongoing since 2011.
There was never any uncertainty regarding Sinner's exceptional, powerful shots and how he was improving and incorporating them into his game. Nonetheless, at the beginning of the year, there were hesitations about his resilience against the top players in critical matches. However, he is concluding the year by affirming that he is capable of contending for the most notable championships in the future.
