Davis Cup: Great Britain awarded wild card to group stage of 2024 competition

Davis Cup

Next year's Davis Cup group stage will feature Great Britain, who have been granted a wild card entry.

The team led by Leon Smith has been given a free ride for the third time in a row, thanks to the newly introduced format in 2019. This means they won't have to play a qualifying match in February and will progress directly to the first part of the finals in September. It's highly possible that they will host a group once again.

Manchester had a massive turn-out this year, as the team from Britain beat Australia, Switzerland, and France to secure their spot in the final eight in Malaga.

However, some people found fault with the low number of spectators in matches that didn't involve Britain. A clip showing empty seating areas, shared by tennis player and three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka, received additional criticism towards the tournament's structure.

The British team's visit to Malaga was short-lived, as Serbia defeated them 2-0 in the quarter-finals on Thursday, dashing their hopes of winning the trophy once more.

A wild card was given to Spain, and Malaga will host the finals for one more year. Italy and Australia, who were last year's finalists, have automatically qualified for the group stage.

GB To Face France In Billie Jean King Cup

At the moment, the United Kingdom is set to compete against France again during the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers in April.

The team led by Anne Keothavong experienced defeat from the identical opponents in Coventry earlier this year. Caroline Garcia won against Katie Boulter while Harriet Dart couldn't triumph over Garcia and Alize Cornet.

Earlier this month, Britain emerged as the winner against Sweden to prevent the possibility of being relegated. However, the upcoming match in the next year would be more challenging as it would be hosted in France. This may result in a battle on clay from April 12-13.

Boulter has shown that she is the top British player this season, while Keothavong will have to see if Emma Raducanu, who is in the process of making a comeback after recovering from wrist and ankle surgeries, will be able to compete.

It's possible that Raducanu will have to participate in matches to meet the requirements to participate in the Paris Olympics next year.

Next November, the finals with 12 teams will be held in Seville once again. Canada, the champions, Italy, the runners-up, and the host country Spain have already guaranteed their spots in the finals. Additionally, the Czech Republic has been granted a wild card entry.
