Filmmaker David Lynch Now Housebound - Dark Horizons
David Lynch is a legendary filmmaker, but years of smoking have affected him significantly.
The filmmaker behind iconic movies such as "Mulholland Drive" and "Blue Velvet," as well as the television series "Twin Peaks," has opened up about facing significant health challenges.
Lynch received an emphysema diagnosis due to his smoking habit in 2020. In a recent interview with People, he shared that he is now confined to his home. He is unable to go out and can only manage to walk limited distances.
He also requires an oxygen tank to be with him at all times. He mentions that he kept smoking for another two years after receiving the diagnosis until he finally understood that he had to either stop smoking or face the possibility of dying within a week.
Regarding his future in filmmaking, the 78-year-old expressed that he is “willing to explore the option of directing from a distance in the future.”
He explains that smoking played a vital role in his creativity. Although he acknowledges it came with significant consequences, he states, “I don’t regret it. It meant a lot to me. Like many addicts, I just wish that the things we enjoy were healthy for us.”
In 2019, Lynch planned to work on a secretive project that was rumored to feature Naomi Watts and Laura Dern, intended to be a multi-episode series on Netflix. However, the project was canceled during the pre-production stage.
His most recent project was directing the complete series of "Twin Peaks: The Return," which aired on Showtime in 2017. This work is often regarded as a masterpiece, comparable to his most acclaimed creations.
